Set to run from April 25 to May 10 in Trinidad & Tobago, the inaugural edition of the West Indies Breakout League is a landmark initiative. With teams closely aligned with Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchises, the league offers a direct path for rising players to catch the eyes of scouts and selectors.

Although he’s made sporadic T20 appearances 22 matches in total he acknowledges the lack of consistent chances in the shortest format. This league, he believes, can be a game-changer not just for him but for many overlooked players in the Caribbean system.

“I've played 22 games, and I just haven't gotten as much opportunity [in T20s],” Da Silva admitted. “This tournament should open more doors for me and for a lot of other players as well.”

His intention is clear: use this breakout platform to build T20 credentials that extend beyond national borders. With regional and global franchise leagues becoming lucrative and competitive, every standout innings or sharp performance could be the ticket to a long-term T20 career.

Leading the Trinidad & Tobago Legions

As captain of the Trinidad & Tobago Legions, Da Silva is embracing the dual challenge of leadership and personal performance. He’s not only guiding a young squad in an entirely new league but also working to reframe his own T20 potential. In a country known for producing T20 legends like Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, and Sunil Narine, the legacy of short-format success runs deep. Da Silva wants to be part of that narrative.

“We pride ourselves on the legacy we have in T20 cricket. It's an honour to represent Trinidad & Tobago at any level,” he said. “Hopefully we can live up to that legacy.”

Da Silva is aware that the expectations are high, both from within the squad and from fans across the Caribbean. Yet, he insists that the key is staying grounded and enjoying the moment.

“You never know who's watching,” he shared. “So each time you step on the field, it's golden. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Have fun and let your cricket do the talking.”

Fundamentals Still Matter in T20

Though T20 cricket is often associated with explosive hitting and unorthodox techniques, Da Silva remains rooted in fundamentals. He believes traditional batting values like timing, footwork, and shot selection still have a place in the modern T20 game.

“I still believe that the fundamentals of cricket are very important and help you in the T20 format,” he said. “Yes, kids love T20 more than the four-day format now, but that doesn't mean we can ignore the basics.”

Citing examples of legendary T20 players who also excelled in red-ball cricket, Da Silva makes the case for balanced development. His goal is to blend his red-ball discipline with aggressive shot-making, crafting a well-rounded T20 game that can succeed under pressure.

“We can't just come out and swing for the fences every few games,” he explained. “That's not sustainable, and it's not going to get you the big bucks in franchise leagues.”

A Strategic Platform for Emerging Caribbean Talent

The West Indies Breakout League 2025 isn’t just about entertainment it’s about opportunity. With a strict eligibility criteria that limits players to under 30 years old and excludes those with extensive List A or international T20 experience, the league guarantees that fresh faces take center stage.

Each of the six teams Barbados Pelicans, Guyana Rainforest Rangers, Jamaica Titans, Leeward Islands Thunder, Trinidad & Tobago Legions, and Windward Islands Infernos is affiliated with a CPL franchise. This alignment adds an extra layer of incentive. Perform well, and players could earn a CPL contract or even spark interest from leagues in South Africa, the UAE, or North America.

For Da Silva, that’s the kind of impact he’s aiming for. “This is a tournament where eyes will be on us. If you’ve never had a contract before, this is your moment to earn one,” he said. “Performance is key.”

He hopes the tournament becomes an annual fixture in the West Indies cricket calendar, not only for the exposure it provides but also for the developmental infrastructure it builds. Young Caribbean cricketers need more pathways, and the Breakout League could be a pillar in that future.
