A New Chapter for West Indies Cricket
Cricket West Indies (CWI) has officially unveiled its 15-man squad for the highly anticipated CG United One Day International (ODI) home series against Bangladesh. Branded the “West Indies Home for Christmas” series, this enthralling three-match face-off is scheduled to be played at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts & Nevis, from December 8 to December 12, 2024.
The squad announcement reflects strategic changes aimed at maintaining momentum following the West Indies’ thrilling 2-1 series victory over England in “The Rivalry” series earlier this year.
Key Changes in the Lineup
All-rounder Justin Greaves and wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo have been called up to replace Hayden Walsh Jnr and Jewel Andrew. These changes signal Cricket West Indies’ intent to bolster their batting and all-round capabilities, as the team continues to evolve with the ICC Men’s 50-over World Cup on the horizon.
Jewel Andrew’s omission comes with a developmental opportunity. He will join a cohort of emerging West Indian batters at a specialized batting camp in India’s Chennai Academy, where the focus will be on improving technique against spin bowling.
Rising Stars: Greaves and Jangoo
Justin Greaves returns to the fold, brimming with confidence after a stellar CG United Super50 season, during which he achieved an unprecedented three consecutive List A centuries. Adding to his credentials, Greaves recently scored a maiden Test century against Bangladesh, cementing his place as a reliable top-order batter with genuine all-round potential.
Amir Jangoo also earns his selection through a standout Super50 season. Scoring 446 runs in just seven innings at an impressive average of 89.20, Jangoo showcased consistency and adaptability, making him a valuable addition to the West Indies squad.
Coach Daren Sammy’s Vision
West Indies Head Coach Daren Sammy emphasized the strategic significance of the squad. According to Sammy, the inclusion of players like Greaves and Jangoo brings an ideal balance to the team.
“Greaves offers versatility in the batting lineup and adds depth with his all-round skills. Meanwhile, Jangoo’s outstanding performances in the Super50 have demonstrated his ability to adapt to various game situations, which is vital as we prepare for bigger challenges,” Sammy explained.
Sammy reiterated that the immediate focus is on winning the home series while building a formidable team for the upcoming ICC Men’s 50-over World Cup.
Leadership and Team Composition
The squad will be led by the seasoned Shai Hope, with Brandon King as his deputy. Both players have been instrumental in West Indies’ recent successes and bring stability to a team that combines experience with fresh talent.
