White Ferns Reinforced with Key Players Returning for Australia T20I Series
The White Ferns are set to close their home summer on a high note with the return of key players Sophie Devine, Melie Kerr, and Lea Tahuhu for the upcoming T20I series against Australia. The three-match series, part of a thrilling T20I doubleheader alongside the Blackcaps and Pakistan, will be hosted in Auckland, Tauranga, and Wellington, beginning on March 21 at Eden Park.
The return of these experienced players adds significant depth to the squad, boosting New Zealand’s chances against a formidable Australian side. Devine, who has been on a well-being break, is making her much-anticipated comeback after missing the Dream11 Super Smash, Women’s Premier League, and the recent home series against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Kerr returns from a triumphant Women’s Premier League campaign with the Mumbai Indians, while Tahuhu re-enters the fold following a hamstring injury that sidelined her since December.
Devine Ready for a Fresh Start
Sophie Devine’s return to international cricket comes after a much-needed break for personal well-being. Having stepped down as T20I captain following New Zealand’s victory in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final, Devine is now focused on making an impact as a key player. White Ferns head coach Ben Sawyer expressed confidence in her readiness, emphasizing her power and ability to change games single-handedly.
“Soph’s had some time away from the game and is now in a space where she’s looking forward to getting back out on the park. Everyone knows the power she possesses and what an asset she is to any team,” Sawyer said.
Devine herself acknowledged the importance of the break and her excitement to be back. “It’s nice to have had some time to reset and refocus. I’m really looking forward to getting back out there with the girls,” she said.
Melie Kerr Returns with Winning Momentum
Melie Kerr, the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year, returns to the squad fresh off her second Women’s Premier League title with the Mumbai Indians. Kerr’s last T20I appearance for New Zealand was in the T20 World Cup final, where she delivered a match-winning performance, scoring 43 off 38 balls and taking three wickets for 24 runs, leading the White Ferns to a 32-run victory.
Her all-round ability will be crucial against Australia’s aggressive approach, and her experience in high-pressure matches makes her an invaluable asset for the team. With her recent success in franchise cricket, Kerr will be looking to replicate her winning form on home soil.
Lea Tahuhu’s Pace Attack Boost
The White Ferns’ bowling unit receives a significant boost with the return of veteran pacer Lea Tahuhu. After recovering from a hamstring injury that kept her out of international action since December, the experienced seamer is back to spearhead New Zealand’s pace attack.
Her presence will be instrumental in countering Australia’s batting firepower, providing the White Ferns with much-needed experience and aggression in the bowling department. With Tahuhu back in the mix, New Zealand’s bowling attack looks well-rounded and capable of making an impact in the series.
Squad Adjustments and New Faces
Otago Sparks batter Bella James also returns after recovering from a quadricep strain that kept her out of the recent ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka. James, who is yet to make her T20I debut, successfully passed fitness tests and will join the squad in Auckland.
Wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Gaze, however, remains sidelined due to a hip flexor sprain sustained during the third ODI against Sri Lanka. Polly Inglis, who recently debuted in both white-ball formats, will replace Gaze in the squad.
The squad retains a strong core from the team that recently drew the T20I series against Sri Lanka. With Emma McLeod, Izzy Sharp, Flora Devonshire, and Bree Illing making way for Devine, Kerr, James, and Tahuhu, the White Ferns appear well-equipped to take on Australia.
Suzie Bates Leads as Interim Captain
With Devine stepping down as T20I captain, veteran batter Suzie Bates will continue to lead the side in the upcoming series. Her experience and leadership will be crucial in guiding the team against the reigning T20 World Champions.
White Ferns head coach Ben Sawyer expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform. “We’re stoked to have Soph, Melie, and Lea back for this series. They’re three key players who bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the group,” he said.
A High-Intensity Series Awaits
The White Ferns will be up against one of the strongest sides in women’s cricket, making this series a true test of their mettle. Australia’s aggressive style of play and depth in both batting and bowling pose a significant challenge, but with New Zealand regaining key players, the contest promises to be an exciting spectacle.
The Life Direct T20I series will be broadcast live and free in New Zealand on TVNZ 1, TVNZ+, and Sport Nation. Live scoring will also be available on the NZC website and app.

2nd T20I: Sunday, March 23 – Bay Oval, Tauranga, 2:45 PM
