Ambati Rayudu Backs India Batters After Ireland Series Loss Ahead of England Challenge

Former India batter Ambati Rayudu has defended the Indian batting unit following the team's surprising 2-0 T20I series defeat against Ireland, insisting it would be unfair to blame the batters alone. With India now preparing for a five-match T20I series against England, Rayudu believes the change in playing conditions will allow the team to return to its best.

India's unexpected defeat in Belfast ended an impressive unbeaten run in T20I bilateral series and raised questions about the batting order. However, Rayudu feels the circumstances surrounding the tour played a much bigger role than individual performances.

Challenging Conditions Troubled India's Batters

India's top-order, featuring Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, struggled throughout the Ireland series as the new ball moved considerably under overcast conditions. Swing-friendly pitches, larger boundaries and disciplined bowling from Ireland exposed the difficulties of quickly adapting after the IPL season.

Rayudu pointed out that Indian batters had very little time to switch from the flat batting surfaces used during IPL 2026 to the seam-friendly wickets in Belfast.

According to him, the adjustment required significant changes in technique. Batters who had recently enjoyed success with aggressive bat swings on batting-friendly pitches suddenly had to play much later and with greater control against moving deliveries.

He believes such technical changes cannot happen overnight, making the criticism directed at the batting unit unfair.

England Conditions Expected to Suit India Better

Despite the disappointing results in Ireland, Rayudu remains optimistic about India's chances in England.

He feels the players will now be more accustomed to overseas conditions after spending time in Ireland. While English conditions may still offer assistance to bowlers, he expects the batting surfaces to be more consistent and allow stroke-makers greater freedom.

The former middle-order batter believes the experience gained during the Ireland series will help India make quicker adjustments when they begin the T20I series in Durham.

Washington Sundar's Role Still Developing

Rayudu also shared his views on all-rounder Washington Sundar's place in India's T20 setup.

He described Sundar primarily as a bowling all-rounder who has steadily improved his batting over recent seasons. While Sundar can contribute valuable runs in the middle order, Rayudu feels he is not yet a specialist finisher capable of consistently delivering under extreme pressure.

However, he praised Sundar's progress and believes his batting will continue to improve with experience.

Patience Is Best for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

One of the biggest talking points during the Ireland series was the absence of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from the playing XI.

Rayudu supported the team management's decision, saying that simply being part of the Indian dressing room is an important learning experience for such a young cricketer.

He explained that understanding team culture, preparation methods and international standards will help Sooryavanshi become better equipped whenever his debut opportunity arrives.

Rayudu also noted that the current opening batters deserve continued backing after contributing significantly to India's recent T20 World Cup success.

Confidence in Shreyas Iyer's Leadership

Rayudu expressed complete faith in captain Shreyas Iyer despite the disappointing series defeat.

He praised Iyer's calm personality, stating that the skipper rarely allows victories or defeats to affect his mindset. According to Rayudu, this balanced approach makes him well-suited to guide India through difficult phases.

He expects Iyer to perform strongly with both bat and captaincy in England and believes the upcoming series presents an excellent opportunity for India to respond positively after the setback in Ireland.

The Ireland series served as a valuable learning experience for India's relatively new-look T20 side. Difficult conditions exposed areas for improvement, but they also provided important overseas exposure before a much bigger challenge.
