Amol Muzumdar Backs India Bowling Attack After Womens T20 World Cup Defeat

India head coach Amol Muzumdar has expressed complete faith in his young bowling unit despite the team's disappointing six-wicket loss to South Africa in the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup. While the defeat at Old Trafford complicated India's semi-final qualification hopes, the coach believes the inexperienced attack will develop into a formidable force with time and international exposure.

With must-win matches against Bangladesh and Australia approaching, Muzumdar remains optimistic that his squad has the quality and resilience to bounce back.

Young Bowling Unit Needs Time to Grow

India's bowling attack struggled to contain South Africa as Marizanne Kapp produced a sensational unbeaten 81 off just 45 deliveries to guide her side to victory. Apart from an impressive three-wicket spell by Shree Charani and a useful contribution from Shafali Verma, the Indian bowlers found it difficult to break partnerships during the chase.

However, Muzumdar defended his bowling group by highlighting their lack of international experience.

The coach pointed out that Deepti Sharma is currently the only established bowler in the lineup, while players such as Shree Charani, Prema Rawat, Shreyanka Patil, Kranti Gaud and Nandini Sharma are still in the early stages of their international careers.

According to Muzumdar, another 24 months of consistent exposure could transform the group into one of India's biggest strengths.

Radha Yadav Receives Full Support

The match also featured two crucial dropped catches by substitute fielder Radha Yadav, allowing Marizanne Kapp to continue her innings and eventually finish unbeaten.

Despite the costly mistakes, Muzumdar refused to criticize the experienced left-arm spinner. Instead, he praised Radha as one of the finest fielders in the current squad and described her as a world-class athlete capable of responding positively.

The coach believes every cricketer experiences difficult moments and expects Radha to make significant contributions later in the tournament.

Middle Order Under Pressure Again

India's batting once again showed promise before losing momentum in the middle overs. Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues and Yastika Bhatia departed in quick succession, preventing the team from posting a more challenging total.

With Richa Ghosh unable to produce her usual finishing fireworks, India finished on 158, a score that proved slightly below par.

Muzumdar, however, is not concerned by the collapse. He explained that India's fearless approach naturally involves risk, and clusters of wickets are an accepted part of aggressive T20 cricket.

The coach also backed Jemimah Rodrigues, calling her a clutch performer who has the talent to win matches and expressing confidence that big performances are just around the corner.

India Face Must Win Challenge

The defeat has intensified the race for the semi-finals, leaving India with little margin for error. Victories over Bangladesh and defending champions Australia are now crucial if Harmanpreet Kaur's side hopes to advance to the knockout stage.

Muzumdar acknowledged that the South Africa fixture was always expected to be a defining contest but insisted the tournament is far from over.

He remains confident that if India perform to their full potential across all three departments, they have the ability to defeat both opponents and keep their Women's T20 World Cup title ambitions alive.

The coming days will test the character of a young Indian squad, but their coach believes patience, confidence and experience will ultimately shape a stronger and more successful bowling attack for the future.
