Bangladesh produced a sensational all-round performance to defeat Australia by 86 runs (DLS method) in the 1st ODI of the Australia tour of Bangladesh 2026 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. The victory gave Bangladesh a perfect start to the series and showcased the growing strength of their ODI unit against top international teams.
After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 284/8 in 50 overs, thanks to brilliant batting performances from Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, and especially Mosaddek Hossain, who played a game-changing unbeaten knock.
Mosaddek Hossain’s Match-Winning Finish
The biggest highlight of Bangladesh’s innings was undoubtedly Mosaddek Hossain’s unbeaten 86 off 70 balls. His aggressive strokeplay in the death overs completely shifted the momentum toward Bangladesh. The experienced all-rounder smashed boundaries consistently and punished the Australian bowlers during the final overs.
Earlier in the innings, Najmul Hossain Shanto scored a classy 67, while opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim added a quick-fire 54, helping Bangladesh build a strong foundation. Towhid Hridoy also contributed with an important 31-run knock in the middle overs.
Australia’s bowling attack struggled to control the scoring rate during the final phase despite Nathan Ellis picking up 3 wickets.
Nahid Rana Destroys Australia’s Batting Order
Chasing 285, Australia suffered a disastrous start when Matthew Short was dismissed on the very first ball by Taskin Ahmed. Bangladesh’s pace attack maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings.
Young fast bowler Nahid Rana emerged as the star with the ball, taking 4 crucial wickets and dismantling Australia’s middle order with sheer pace and aggression. His spell completely changed the game and pushed Australia onto the back foot.
Veteran pacer Mustafizur Rahman added two wickets, while Mosaddek Hossain impressed again with the ball by claiming two important wickets.
Although Cameron Green fought hard with an unbeaten 52 and Alex Carey scored 47, Australia never truly recovered from the early collapse and eventually finished on 191/9 in 42.2 overs.
Bangladesh Send Strong Message Ahead of ODI Series
This dominant victory is a massive confidence boost for Bangladesh, especially against a strong Australian side filled with international experience. The combination of aggressive batting, disciplined bowling, and energetic fielding proved too much for Australia in Dhaka.
The performance of young players like Nahid Rana and Tanzid Hasan Tamim will particularly excite Bangladesh fans, as the team continues building a strong core for the future.
With momentum now on their side, Bangladesh will look to continue their dominance in the upcoming ODI matches, while Australia will need a strong comeback to stay alive in the series.
