BCB Looks to Extend Simmons and Salahuddin’s Contracts Until 2027 ODI World Cup
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is looking to solidify its coaching staff, with discussions underway to extend the contracts of head coach Phil Simmons and senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin until the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2027. Despite Bangladesh's early exit from the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy, the board remains confident in the duo's leadership and plans to continue their tenure.
Bangladesh's Champions Trophy Performance and Coaching Review
Bangladesh’s campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy ended in disappointment as they failed to progress past the group stage. Losses to India and New Zealand, followed by a rain-washed encounter against Pakistan, left them without a significant impact in the tournament. However, the BCB remains optimistic about the work Simmons and Salahuddin have put into the team’s development, emphasizing long-term growth over short-term results.
BCB Confirms Coaching Discussions in the Coming Days
During a board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, BCB's Cricket Operations chairman, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, confirmed that official discussions with Simmons and Salahuddin will begin within the next few days. He highlighted that both contracts are set to expire by mid-March, and the board’s priority is to retain them rather than search for alternatives.
“Our head coach and senior assistant coach’s contracts run until mid-March. We are satisfied with their work and will reach out to them for discussions. If an agreement is not reached, we will consider alternatives, but our priority is to retain them,” Fahim stated.
BCB’s vision revolves around a structured and sustainable approach rather than frequent changes in coaching staff. With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, the board aims to maintain stability within the coaching ranks.
Why BCB Wants Simmons and Salahuddin for the Long Run
Phil Simmons, a former West Indies player and a highly experienced coach, was initially appointed as Bangladesh’s interim head coach in October last year. Under his leadership, the Tigers secured a dominant 3-0 T20I series win against the West Indies but struggled in other formats, including their Champions Trophy campaign. Despite the setbacks, BCB sees value in his tactical acumen and ability to foster local coaching talent.
Salahuddin, a well-respected local coach, has played a key role in player development, with many Bangladeshi cricketers crediting him for their progress. His ability to work effectively alongside Simmons has been a major factor in BCB’s inclination to retain both coaches.
Spin Bowling Coach and Fielding Overhaul in Focus
BCB has already extended the contract of spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed, ensuring continuity in that department. Additionally, they are actively seeking two high-profile fielding coaches to address the team's fielding deficiencies, which have been a persistent issue in recent years. Improving fielding standards is one of BCB’s priorities heading into future international assignments.
What’s Next for Bangladesh Cricket
With no international matches scheduled until mid-April, when they host Zimbabwe for a home Test series, BCB is using this period to finalize key coaching decisions. They also plan to conduct a coaching workshop that will bring together mentors from district cricket to the national team level. This initiative aims to create a uniform development structure and strengthen the grassroots system.
Additionally, Pakistan’s former leg-spinner Shahid Mahmood has had his contract extended for another six months, continuing his role in the Game Development Department. His expertise is expected to benefit emerging players in Bangladesh’s domestic setup.
A New Era of Stability for Bangladesh Cricket
Fahim emphasized that retaining Simmons and Salahuddin aligns with BCB’s long-term vision.
“We want them for the long haul, ideally until the next ODI World Cup. We have already begun long-term planning—whether it’s about coaching staff, squad selection, or upcoming series. Our goal is to create a structured pathway for development,” he added.
This long-term approach could mark a significant shift for Bangladesh cricket, allowing players and support staff to work within a stable framework rather than frequently adjusting to new coaching philosophies.
Conclusion
BCB’s commitment to continuity signals a strategic move toward sustainable growth in Bangladesh cricket. While results in the Champions Trophy were underwhelming, the board’s faith in Simmons and Salahuddin underscores their belief in a process-driven approach. As discussions unfold, fans will be eager to see whether the coaching duo will commit to steering Bangladesh cricket toward greater heights in the coming years.
