Ben Dwarshuis Leads Washington Freedom to Thrilling Win and Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive
Ben Dwarshuis delivered one of the most memorable finishes of the Major League Cricket 2026 season, smashing an unbeaten 38 off just 16 balls to guide Washington Freedom to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Texas Super Kings. The dramatic win not only kept Washington Freedom firmly in the race for the playoffs but also officially ended Texas Super Kings' hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
With pressure mounting during a tense run chase, Ben Dwarshuis showcased remarkable composure and fearless stroke play to turn the contest in Washington Freedom's favour.
Washington Freedom were chasing 166 and looked comfortable during the early stages of the innings. However, the game changed rapidly as wickets began to tumble. From a commanding 79/1 after eight overs, the batting side slipped to 107/6 in the 16th over, placing enormous responsibility on Ben Dwarshuis and Obus Pienaar.
The required run rate kept climbing, but Ben Dwarshuis refused to panic. Instead, he counterattacked brilliantly in the 17th over by launching two massive sixes, while Pienaar also cleared the ropes as the pair collected 22 valuable runs. The aggressive approach immediately shifted momentum and brought Washington Freedom back into the contest.
Even after Adam Milne bowled a disciplined over, Ben Dwarshuis found an important boundary off the final delivery to ensure the equation remained manageable. When Pienaar departed in the penultimate over, the pressure increased once again, but Ben Dwarshuis stayed calm under pressure.
Needing 10 runs from the final over, Ben Dwarshuis produced another decisive moment by dispatching a slower delivery straight down the ground for a towering six. He then comfortably finished the chase with two balls remaining, completing one of the finest match-winning cameos of the tournament. His unbeaten knock included two boundaries and three sixes and highlighted his ability to perform in high-pressure situations.
Earlier in the match, Texas Super Kings looked set for a much bigger total after captain Faf du Plessis and Saiteja Mukkamalla stitched together an impressive 93-run opening partnership. Du Plessis led from the front with a fluent 61, while Mukkamalla added a valuable 47 to lay a solid foundation.
However, Washington Freedom's bowlers produced an outstanding comeback during the latter half of the innings. Mitchell Owen, Rachin Ravindra and Nikhil Chaudhary each claimed two wickets as Texas Super Kings suffered a dramatic collapse, losing six wickets for just 33 runs. Their disciplined bowling effort ensured the target remained within reach.
Washington Freedom also enjoyed a promising start to the chase through Rachin Ravindra and Steve Smith, who added 60 quick runs before the middle order collapsed. Fortunately for the team, Ben Dwarshuis delivered when it mattered most and rescued the innings with an exceptional finishing display.
The victory lifted Washington Freedom to fourth place in the MLC 2026 standings with 10 points, level with the teams above them, separated only by net run rate. Meanwhile, Texas Super Kings were eliminated from playoff contention, bringing an end to their campaign.
As the playoff race intensifies, Ben Dwarshuis has emerged as the latest hero of MLC 2026. His fearless batting under pressure not only secured a memorable victory but also kept Washington Freedom's championship dreams alive heading into the business end of the tournament.
