Betway SA20 Season 4 Auction: Bigger Purse, More Drama, New Rules

All Eyes on Johannesburg as 72 Player Slots Go Under the Hammer This September

South Africa’s premier T20 franchise league, the Betway SA20, is gearing up for its most significant auction yet, set to take place in Johannesburg on 9 September 2025. With a minimum of 72 player slots up for grabs, a record-breaking salary cap, and the introduction of the strategic Right to Match (RTM) card, Season 4 is shaping up to be a defining chapter in the league’s rise to global prominence.

Since its inception, the Betway SA20 auction has become one of the most anticipated events in the cricketing calendar, not just for South African fans but across the international T20 scene. This year’s auction is expected to draw fierce bidding, tactical surprises, and a star-studded list of both seasoned internationals and South Africa’s brightest young talents.

Biggest Purse Yet: R41 Million Per Franchise

The most notable headline ahead of the 2025 auction is the record salary cap. Each of the six franchises will have R41 million to build their squads—an increase from the R34 million cap in the inaugural season. This makes SA20 the highest-paying T20 league outside of India, reaffirming its appeal for global stars and its growing financial clout in the franchise cricket world.

This boost in funding allows teams to make bold moves, compete aggressively for marquee players, and invest in long-term talent. The league’s ambition is clear: elevate South African cricket, attract world-class performers, and establish SA20 as a premier global product.

Right to Match Card Introduced: Tactical Twist Ahead

Adding a fresh layer of drama to this year’s Betway SA20 auction is the debut of the Right to Match (RTM) card. This tool allows franchises to retain a player from their Season 3 squad by matching the highest bid made by a rival team at the auction. The catch? RTMs can only be used if teams leave space in their pre-auction South African player retentions.

The RTM system introduces poker-like strategy into the bidding room. Do teams let go of high-profile players now, with a plan to match later? Do they risk holding off and losing them to another team with a deeper pocket? It’s this kind of calculated unpredictability that’s expected to spice up proceedings at the auction table.

Team Structure and Squad Composition Remain Consistent

Each SA20 squad will consist of 18 players—a minimum of 11 South African players and up to 7 overseas players, with one Wildcard player permitted outside the salary cap. The Wildcard rule, first introduced in Season 2, remains a fan favorite and a smart way for franchises to pull off surprise late signings.

Franchises can retain or pre-sign up to six players before the auction, but only three South Africans and three overseas players are allowed in this pre-window. This rule ensures a healthy mix of continuity and competition during the auction, where new players have a real shot at being picked based on current form.

Another important change is the removal of the Rookie Draft. Instead, each team is now required to sign at least two U23 players in their 19-player squad, ensuring ongoing commitment to youth development—a pillar of the Betway SA20’s vision.

Richard Madley Returns to Command the Gavel

Once again, auctioneer Richard Madley, now synonymous with the Betway SA20 auction, will take center stage. Known for his iconic calls and fast-paced gavel work, Madley’s presence brings familiarity and flair to what is expected to be a high-pressure afternoon of bids and battles.

The auction will be broadcast live on SuperSport and streamed globally via the SA20 YouTube channel, with coverage across all social media platforms. From fans to analysts to agents and scouts, all eyes will be locked onto Johannesburg on 9 September.

New Season, New Stars, Same Festive Thrill

Season 4 of Betway SA20 officially kicks off on 26 December 2025, strategically positioned during the festive holiday period to maximize attendance and TV viewership. The timing capitalizes on South Africa’s summer break and offers non-stop entertainment heading into the new year.

Many eyes will be on who ends up where—will established stars like Jos Buttler, Anrich Nortje, or Rashid Khan return to their former teams, or will the auction dynamics shake the table? Which rising local talents will be given the platform to shine under pressure?

With 72 slots available and a wider pool of free agents and domestic stars on the rise, there’s potential for major shifts across franchises. Expect fireworks in the auction room and fierce debates in living rooms, as every pick shapes the destiny of the title chase.

Why the SA20 Auction Matters Globally

The Betway SA20 is no longer just a domestic event. It is part of a broader evolution in global franchise cricket. By increasing its salary cap, enhancing competitive fairness, and investing in local talent, SA20 is carving out a unique identity—somewhere between the IPL’s high-octane glamour and the BBL’s grassroots energy.

More importantly, for South African cricket, it offers financial security, high-level exposure for young players, and a pipeline into international cricket. Every player signed, every card used, and every bid made is shaping not just a league but a future.
