The MA Chidambaram Stadium, popularly known as Chepauk, was selected after extensive discussions between Cricket Australia and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). A joint delegation visited Chennai earlier this year to inspect the venue and coordinate preparations for the historic fixture.

The Big Bash League 2026 opener also arrives at an important time for the competition. Cricket Australia is currently exploring private investment opportunities for its franchises, with Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers expected to be among the first clubs that could attract outside investors. Melbourne Renegades were chosen as the designated home team largely because of scheduling flexibility following their decision to shift their home matches from Marvel Stadium to the Melbourne Cricket Ground this season.

The move ends the Renegades' 15-year association with Marvel Stadium, which had been their home since the inaugural Big Bash League season in 2011. Club officials believe the MCG will provide bigger crowds and a stronger atmosphere while also complementing the league's international ambitions.
