Zimbabwe Cricket has taken another important step in strengthening its national team by appointing legendary West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh as the Zimbabwe Bowling Coach for the senior men's team. The appointment comes after Walsh's successful stint as the team's bowling consultant during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, where Zimbabwe exceeded expectations by reaching the Super Eights after topping Group B.

The experienced coach now joins the Zimbabwe setup on a full-time basis as the board continues to build stability and long-term success around its national teams.

Courtney Walsh Returns in a Full Time Role

Walsh is widely regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history. During his illustrious playing career, he became the first bowler to reach 500 Test wickets and remains one of the finest pace bowlers the game has ever produced.

His recent consultancy role with Zimbabwe during the T20 World Cup left a positive impression on both players and management. Under his guidance, Zimbabwe's bowling attack displayed improved discipline and consistency, helping the team qualify for the Super Eights in one of its best ICC tournament performances in recent years.

Recognising his impact, Zimbabwe Cricket has now entrusted him with the role on a permanent basis.

Vast Coaching Experience

Walsh brings extensive international coaching experience to Zimbabwe.

He previously served as Bangladesh's bowling coach from 2016 before taking over as interim head coach in 2018 following Chandika Hathurusingha's departure.

In 2020, Walsh was appointed head coach of the West Indies Women's team, where he worked until the conclusion of the 2023 ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

His coaching journey across different international teams has equipped him with valuable knowledge that Zimbabwe hopes will further develop its fast bowlers.

Justin Sammons Continues as Head Coach

While Walsh's appointment grabs the headlines, Zimbabwe Cricket has also reaffirmed its faith in head coach Justin Sammons, who will continue leading the senior men's team.

The board has retained most of the existing coaching and support staff to ensure continuity within the squad.

The coaching unit now includes:

  • Head Coach: Justin Sammons

  • Bowling Coach: Courtney Walsh

  • Batting Coach: Dion Ebrahim

  • Fielding and Lower Order Batting Coach: Stuart Matsikenyeri

  • Strength and Conditioning Coach: Curtly Diesel

Zimbabwe Cricket believes maintaining consistency within the coaching group will provide players with a stable environment ahead of future international assignments.

Changes Beyond the Coaching Staff

Zimbabwe Cricket has also introduced several structural changes aimed at strengthening its player development pathway.

Former Zimbabwe international Chamu Chibhabha will begin preparing for future team management responsibilities by understudying current team manager Dilip Chouhan.

The senior men's selection panel has also been refreshed, with former international cricketers Hamilton Masakadza and Christopher Mpofu joining David Mutendera on the selection committee.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has retained Elton Chigumbura as Under-19 head coach, ensuring continuity in youth development. Former all-rounder Donald Tiripano has also been promoted to assistant bowling coach for the Under-19 side.

Zimbabwe Building for the Future

Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani described the appointments as an important step towards achieving the board's long-term strategic goals.

According to the board, the new structure combines experienced international coaches, former Zimbabwe internationals and fresh leadership to strengthen every stage of the country's cricket pathway.

With Walsh leading the bowling department and experienced former players taking on greater responsibilities, Zimbabwe aims to continue the progress shown during the recent T20 World Cup.

A Significant Appointment

Courtney Walsh's arrival represents one of Zimbabwe Cricket's most significant coaching appointments in recent years.

His legendary playing career, combined with years of international coaching experience, makes him an ideal mentor for Zimbabwe's emerging fast bowlers. Having already established strong relationships with the players during the T20 World Cup, Walsh now has the opportunity to build a long-term bowling culture capable of competing consistently at the highest level.

As Zimbabwe prepares for upcoming international assignments and ICC tournaments, the appointment signals the board's commitment to sustained growth rather than short-term success. With continuity across the coaching staff and renewed focus on player development, Zimbabwe Cricket appears well-positioned to continue its upward trajectory on the global stage.
