CSK playoff qualification scenarios: What Chennai Super Kings need after LSG defeat
Chennai Super Kings’ loss in their 12th league match against Lucknow Super Giants has pushed them into a must-win situation in the IPL 2026 playoff race. With only two matches left — against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans — CSK are now on 12 points from 12 games and can reach a maximum of 16 points.
That makes the equation very simple for the five-time champions: win both or almost certainly go home.
The current points table shows Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans already on 16 points, while Sunrisers Hyderabad sit on 14, Punjab Kings on 13, Rajasthan Royals on 12, and Delhi Capitals on 10. Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are further behind, but several teams still have enough games left to stay in the race.
For CSK, the biggest concern is that they no longer control their own fate. Even if they win both remaining matches, they will finish on 16 points, which is not a guaranteed playoff ticket because other teams can still move past them or equal their tally.

What CSK need to do
The first step is non-negotiable: CSK must beat Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans.
A single win would take them to 14 points, which is extremely unlikely to be enough in a crowded top half of the table. Two losses would end their season immediately.
If CSK win both, the qualification picture becomes one of points plus net run rate. Their best hope is to finish on 16 and then rely on other teams dropping points. Since RCB and GT are already on 16, CSK cannot aim to finish above them on points alone. The only way forward is to stay alive until the last stage and hope the table compresses around the 14-16 mark.
Best-case scenario for CSK
For Chennai, the most helpful results elsewhere would be:
Kolkata Knight Riders beat Gujarat Titans
Punjab Kings beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Sunrisers Hyderabad
Delhi Capitals beat Rajasthan Royals
Lucknow Super Giants beat Rajasthan Royals or Punjab Kings, depending on how the race develops
These results would keep several chasing teams from running away with 17 or 18 points and could leave CSK in the mix at 16, where net run rate may become decisive.
Worst-case scenario for CSK
The danger is obvious. If teams like SRH, PBKS and RR keep winning, the cutoff could rise well above 16, which would shut CSK out even if they win both remaining games. That is why the Chennai camp will be watching every result around them.
CSK qualification paths
1. Win both matches
This is CSK’s only realistic route. It takes them to 16 points and keeps the playoff hopes alive. Even then, they will need help from other teams and a strong net run rate.
2. Win one, lose one
This leaves CSK on 14 points. In the current table, that is almost certainly not enough because multiple teams can already reach or pass that mark.
3. Lose both
This would end the campaign with 12 points and no playoff chance.
What makes the race tricky
The table is tightly packed. RCB and GT are already on 16, SRH are breathing down the necks at 14, and PBKS are on 13 with two games left. RR still have three matches in hand and can surge late. That means CSK cannot simply focus on their own two fixtures. They need the right combination of results elsewhere, especially in matches involving the teams above them.
The most important CSK games left on the calendar are:
Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad
Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings
Those two matches will decide whether CSK remain in the conversation or become another big name eliminated before the playoffs.
CSK’s path is narrow but still open. The formula is clear: beat SRH, beat GT, and then hope the results elsewhere keep the playoff cut-off within reach of 16 points. Anything less will likely end Chennai Super Kings’ campaign.
At this stage, CSK are no longer in a position to think about comfort. They are in survival mode.
