Delhi Capitals Fall Short Against Gujarat Giants in WPL 2025 Clash

DC Assistant Coach Lisa Keightley Reflects on Heartbreaking Defeat

Lucknow, March 8, 2025 – The Delhi Capitals’ campaign in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 hit a stumbling block as they suffered a five-wicket loss to Gujarat Giants in their final league-stage match at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. Despite a stunning 92-run knock by captain Meg Lanning, Delhi Capitals were unable to defend their total as Gujarat Giants chased down the 178-run target in a thrilling contest.

Assistant Coach Lisa Keightley weighed in on the performance, acknowledging that the team fell short of what could have been a match-winning total. “Gujarat Giants played really well and bowled effectively throughout the middle overs, restricting us to a total that was slightly below par. We were probably 10-15 runs short. If we had reached around 190, we would have been in a better position,” she admitted.

Lanning’s Masterclass Goes in Vain

Meg Lanning once again proved why she is regarded as one of the finest batters in women’s cricket. The Australian stalwart anchored the innings with a remarkable 92 off just 57 balls, showcasing her ability to build an innings under pressure. Her performance kept Delhi Capitals in the hunt for a strong total, but a lack of late acceleration and Gujarat’s disciplined bowling attack meant that DC had to settle for 178.

Praising Lanning’s leadership and form, Keightley said, “It just shows what a quality player Meg Lanning is. It’s exciting to see her still playing the game and enjoying it the way she does. She loves coming to India and being part of the WPL. From what I see at the moment, she is a very happy Meg who loves the game and tries to help her teammates with anything they need.”

Despite Lanning’s brilliance, Delhi Capitals could not hold off Gujarat Giants in the chase. The opposition batters applied themselves well, staying composed under pressure to seal the win in the final overs.

DC’s Playoff Fate: What Comes Next

With this loss, Delhi Capitals finished their league stage with 10 points and secured a playoff berth. However, their direct qualification to the final is still uncertain. Gujarat Giants, with eight points and a game in hand, and Mumbai Indians, also on eight points with two matches remaining, are still in contention to shake up the standings.

The playoff match is set for March 13, while the highly anticipated WPL 2025 final will take place on March 15 at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Delhi Capitals will be keenly watching the remaining league matches to see if they can secure a direct spot in the final or if they will have to fight it out in the playoff.

Lessons from the Loss: Keightley’s Perspective

Despite the defeat, Keightley remains optimistic about the team’s overall performance in the tournament. She emphasized the importance of learning from setbacks and fine-tuning strategies ahead of the knockout stage.

“We were surely in the game for a very long time, but they batted well and held their nerve at the end to clinch the win,” she remarked. “As a team, we need to reflect on this and ensure we capitalize on key moments in high-pressure matches.”

DC’s bowling attack, which has been a major strength throughout the tournament, struggled to contain Gujarat’s batters in the final overs. Tightening death-over execution and ensuring a strong finishing effort with both bat and ball will be crucial for Delhi Capitals as they head into the business end of WPL 2025.

The Road to the WPL 2025 Title

With the playoffs looming, Delhi Capitals will have a short window to regroup, analyze their shortcomings, and make tactical adjustments. Their top-order batting remains formidable, with Lanning leading from the front, but contributions from the middle and lower order will be critical in crunch situations.

On the bowling front, Delhi’s attack has been one of the best in the competition, but they will need to focus on their death-over strategies to close out matches effectively. Keightley and the coaching staff will undoubtedly be working on these finer aspects as the team prepares for the playoffs.

As the WPL 2025 season heads toward its thrilling conclusion, all eyes will be on how Delhi Capitals respond to this setback. With a strong squad and a determined mindset, they remain one of the favorites to lift the trophy.
