Dilip Vengsarkar Backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Says Sachin Tendulkar Is the Perfect Role Model
Former India captain and ex-chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has thrown his full support behind teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, describing him as an exceptional talent while encouraging the youngster to follow the example set by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar.
The 15-year-old left-handed batter has become one of the most exciting prospects in Indian cricket after impressing in IPL 2026 and continuing his rich form with India A. Although he did not feature in India's playing XI for the opening T20I against Ireland, expectations remain high that his international debut is only a matter of time.
Vengsarkar Impressed by Sooryavanshi's Natural Talent
Speaking about the youngster, Vengsarkar was full of praise for Sooryavanshi's fearless batting style and extraordinary ability to dominate bowlers.
According to the former India skipper, the teenager possesses remarkable hand-eye coordination and a naturally aggressive approach that allows him to clear the boundary with ease.
Vengsarkar believes Sooryavanshi's batting is unique for someone of his age and feels he has already demonstrated qualities needed to succeed in T20 cricket at the highest level.
He also expressed confidence that whenever the youngster gets his opportunity in the Indian team, he will make the most of it.
International Debut Appears Close
Sooryavanshi's inclusion in India's squad for the Ireland and England tours marks another major milestone in his rapidly rising career.
Although he was seen carrying drinks during the opening T20I in Belfast, the teenager continues to remain firmly in contention for a debut in the remaining matches.
His recent performances have made it difficult for selectors to ignore his potential, especially after producing impressive displays in domestic cricket, the IPL and for India A.
Many cricket experts believe his fearless approach could add another exciting dimension to India's already explosive batting lineup.
Sachin Tendulkar the Ideal Example
While praising Sooryavanshi's talent, Vengsarkar stressed that natural ability alone is not enough for a long and successful international career.
He pointed to Sachin Tendulkar as the perfect example of how a young cricketer should approach the game.
Recalling Tendulkar's early days, Vengsarkar highlighted the legendary batter's maturity, discipline, focus and hunger for runs during his school and club cricket days in Mumbai.
Those qualities, according to Vengsarkar, allowed Tendulkar to seamlessly transition into international cricket at a young age.
He believes Sooryavanshi can achieve similar success if he follows the same values of dedication, discipline and continuous improvement.
Can He Succeed in Longer Formats
While Sooryavanshi has already established himself as an exciting T20 batter, Vengsarkar believes it is still too early to judge his prospects in Test cricket.
The former selector admitted he has not yet seen enough of the youngster in longer formats but expressed confidence that he has the potential to adapt successfully whenever opportunities arise.
His comments reflect the importance of allowing young players to develop naturally across formats rather than placing unrealistic expectations on them too early.
Praise for Shreyas Iyer
Vengsarkar also backed India's T20 captain Shreyas Iyer, praising his leadership qualities and calm decision-making.
He believes Iyer leads from the front through his batting and possesses the temperament needed to become a successful captain.
According to Vengsarkar, consistent performances with the bat strengthen a captain's authority and help build confidence within the team.
Support for Sarfaraz Khan and Devdutt Padikkal
The former India captain also called for greater opportunities for Sarfaraz Khan and Devdutt Padikkal in Test cricket.
Vengsarkar recalled their impressive partnership during the India-England Test in Dharamsala and praised both players for displaying excellent temperament and sound technique under pressure.
He added that while talent is important, maintaining fitness and consistency remains essential for securing a permanent place in the national side.
Bright Future Ahead
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to generate enormous excitement across Indian cricket.
Receiving praise from one of India's most respected selectors is another indication of the immense faith experts have in his ability. However, Vengsarkar's advice serves as an important reminder that talent must be matched by discipline, patience and hard work.
If Sooryavanshi follows the path carved out by Sachin Tendulkar while continuing to develop his game, Indian cricket could be witnessing the rise of another extraordinary batting star capable of serving the country for many years to come.
