England Women started their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in sensational fashion after defeating Sri Lanka Women by a massive 87-run margin in the opening Group B clash at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Powered by a breathtaking century from Danni Wyatt-Hodge and a dominant bowling performance from Freya Kemp, England completely outclassed Sri Lanka in all departments and sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament contenders.
After Sri Lanka Women won the toss and chose to bowl first, England Women produced one of the most destructive batting displays in Women’s T20 World Cup history. Openers Amy Jones and Danni Wyatt-Hodge gave England a flying start and completely dominated the Sri Lankan bowling attack during the powerplay.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge Smashes Brilliant Century
Star batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge played one of the finest innings of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 by smashing an unbeaten 105 runs off just 62 balls. Her explosive knock included 13 boundaries and one six, as she attacked the bowlers from the very beginning and never allowed Sri Lanka to settle into the contest.
Amy Jones also played a superb supporting innings with 53 runs from 38 deliveries, helping England build a massive 135-run opening partnership. England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt then finished the innings in style with a blistering unbeaten 46 off just 22 balls, taking England Women to a huge total of 219/1 in 20 overs.
Sri Lanka Women struggled badly with the ball as almost every bowler went for runs. Malki Madara managed to pick up the only wicket for Sri Lanka but conceded 51 runs in her four overs.
Freya Kemp Destroys Sri Lanka’s Batting Lineup
Chasing a massive target of 220, Sri Lanka Women never looked comfortable against England’s disciplined bowling attack. Early wickets from Lauren Bell and Charlotte Dean pushed Sri Lanka under pressure inside the powerplay.
Young all-rounder Freya Kemp completely changed the game with a sensational spell, taking 4 wickets for just 22 runs in her four overs. Kemp removed key batters including Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Kaushani Nuthyangana, and Sugandika Kumari to destroy Sri Lanka’s middle order.
Spinner Sophie Ecclestone and Charlotte Dean also contributed with two wickets each, while Linsey Smith picked up one wicket. Sri Lanka Women were eventually bowled out for 132 runs in 20 overs despite a fighting knock of 39 runs from Nilakshika Silva.
