Hardik Pandya Injury Update Rules Him Out of Afghanistan ODIs

India's preparations for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan have suffered a significant setback after star all-rounder Hardik Pandya reportedly picked up a fresh leg niggle that is likely to keep him out of action for the three-match series.

The development comes at a crucial stage for the Indian team as it continues building combinations and assessing player roles ahead of the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup. Pandya's absence leaves a noticeable gap in both the batting and bowling departments, given his importance as a genuine seam-bowling all-rounder.

Fresh Injury Concern for Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya had been undergoing rehabilitation and fitness assessments at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru since early June. The experienced all-rounder was believed to be close to receiving full fitness clearance after successfully completing batting, bowling and fielding sessions.

Reports suggest Pandya was bowling at full intensity and progressing well in his recovery after dealing with back spasms during IPL 2026. However, a new leg niggle has delayed his return and forced the management to take a cautious approach.

The injury is expected to require a few weeks of recovery, making him unavailable for the ODI series against Afghanistan, which begins on June 13 in Dharamshala before moving to Lucknow and Chennai.

Pandya remains one of India's most valuable white-ball cricketers because of his ability to influence games with both bat and ball. His balance allows India to field an extra specialist batter or bowler, making him a key component of the team's ODI strategy.

Selection Questions for Team Management

India's selection committee may now be forced to look at alternative all-round options. Shivam Dube is one of the leading candidates who could be considered as a replacement. The left-handed batter has already represented India in ODIs and offers a useful seam-bowling option.

Another player who could benefit from the situation is Nitish Kumar Reddy. The young all-rounder has impressed whenever given opportunities and remains a promising long-term prospect in India's white-ball setup.

Pandya's injury setback comes shortly after India lost another senior player. Star batter Virat Kohli has already been ruled out of the Afghanistan ODI series because of a hamstring injury.

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been drafted into the squad as Kohli's replacement, providing the team with a fresh option at the top of the order.

Losing two experienced match-winners ahead of an international series increases the challenge for the Indian management but also opens the door for emerging players to showcase their talent.
