Gill And Rahul Lay The Perfect Foundation
After Afghanistan elected to bowl first, India's top order made the visitors pay heavily. KL Rahul played a patient and technically sound innings of 100, anchoring the batting effort and ensuring India built a solid platform.
Captain Shubman Gill continued his impressive red-ball form with a magnificent 126. The elegant right-hander combined discipline with attacking intent, striking boundaries regularly and frustrating Afghanistan's bowlers.
Sai Sudharsan added a fluent 81, while Rishabh Pant entertained the crowd with an aggressive 81 that featured several trademark attacking strokes.
Washington Sundar then finished the innings in style with an unbeaten 52. Useful contributions from Manav Suthar and Mohammed Siraj helped India post a mammoth 564/8 declared in 127 overs.
The only bright spot for Afghanistan was pacer Mohammad Saleem Safi, who battled tirelessly to claim 6 wickets despite receiving limited support from the other bowlers.
Manav Suthar Steals The Spotlight
While India's batting laid the foundation, debutant Manav Suthar turned the match decisively in the hosts' favour.
The young left-arm spinner produced a sensational spell in Afghanistan's first innings, claiming 6 wickets for 33 runs. His ability to vary pace, extract turn and maintain relentless accuracy made life extremely difficult for the visiting batters.
Rahmat Shah stood out with a determined 60, but Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 152, conceding a huge first-innings deficit of 412 runs.
Prasidh Krishna also impressed with figures of 3/37, providing excellent support from the other end.
Afghanistan Fight Briefly Before Collapse
Asked to follow on, Afghanistan showed more resistance in their second innings. Openers Abdul Malik and Sediqullah Atal produced their best batting partnership against India in Test cricket, adding 42 runs for the first wicket.
Atal played positively and scored a fighting 42, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz contributed a quick 24. For a brief period, Afghanistan appeared capable of extending the contest.
However, Mohammed Siraj broke the opening partnership and India's spinners quickly tightened their grip.
Washington Sundar delivered a match-changing spell, dismissing Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai. His control and ability to extract turn triggered another collapse.
Kuldeep Yadav then wrapped up the tail with three wickets, while Suthar added one more scalp to complete a memorable debut.
Afghanistan were bowled out for 112 in just 35.5 overs, handing India a historic innings victory.
India Create History
The victory by an innings and 300 runs is now India's largest win in Test cricket by margin. It highlighted the depth of India's squad, with senior stars and emerging players all making significant contributions.
For Manav Suthar, the match will remain unforgettable. The young spinner finished with seven wickets in the match and announced his arrival on the international stage in spectacular fashion.
