Jon Lewis Steps Down as England Women’s Head Coach After Impactful Two-Year Tenure

ECB Begins Search for New Leader Ahead of Packed Summer and Upcoming T20 World Cup

London, March 21, 2025 – The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today confirmed that Jon Lewis has stepped down from his role as Head Coach of the England Women’s cricket team, bringing to an end a tenure marked by significant progress, competitive performances, and a new era of bold, attacking cricket.

Appointed in November 2022, Lewis oversaw a period of growth and evolution within the England Women’s setup, guiding the team to 52 wins from 73 matches during his stewardship. England currently sits second in the ICC rankings for both ODIs and T20Is, just behind defending world champions Australia.

In her statement, Clare Connor, ECB Managing Director for England Women and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, praised Lewis’s contributions:
“I’d like to thank Jon for all he has given in his time as Head Coach. He came into the role after a very challenging period for cricketers during the Pandemic, and one of his priorities was to create the right conditions for the team to flourish and develop.”

She also highlighted the team's standout performances, including a drawn 2023 Women’s Ashes series and an impressive streak of eight consecutive ODI series wins.
“While the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and Women’s Ashes in Australia have been disappointing, there is no doubt about the talent we have available and we will look to appoint a successor shortly,” Connor added, setting the stage for a new chapter ahead of an exciting summer that includes visits from India and the West Indies.

A Coach Who Backed Youth and Attacking Cricket

Jon Lewis was widely credited with encouraging an aggressive, fearless style of play, particularly in white-ball formats. His tenure was marked by a focus on developing young talent and creating a culture of confidence and innovation. England’s record crowd attendances and growing fan base over the last two years are seen as a testament to the brand of cricket the team adopted under his guidance.

Reflecting on his departure, Lewis said:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as England Women’s Head Coach. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to finish this incredibly challenging but enjoyable job of developing this young team, whilst winning and growing the women’s game in this country.”

He expressed pride in England’s 83% win rate in 2024 and the record-breaking attendances seen across domestic and international women’s matches in 2023 and 2024.
“I am proud that we have seen unprecedented bumper crowds in 2023 and 2024, and I am determined to continue to help drive women’s cricket forward in whatever comes next for me,” he said, before wishing the players well in their future journeys.

A Background Steeped in English Cricket

Before taking the helm of the England Women’s side, Lewis served as the ECB’s Elite Pace Bowling Coach, working closely with both the men’s Test and white-ball teams. He also led the Young Lions program and held coaching roles at Sussex County Cricket Club. As a player, Lewis enjoyed a long and successful domestic career, taking over 1,200 wickets for Gloucestershire, Surrey, and Sussex, and representing England in 15 matches across formats.

His well-rounded experience made him a natural choice to lead the women's team through a transformative phase. Now, as he exits the role, the ECB will turn its attention to identifying the right successor to carry England Women into a pivotal period, with the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup set to be hosted in India later this year and the 50-over World Cup scheduled on home soil in 2026.

ECB Thanks Lewis, Looks Ahead to “Exciting Time”

Richard Gould, Chief Executive Officer of the ECB, also paid tribute to Lewis, stating:
“Jon has given his all for England Women’s cricket, as well as for the Men’s and Young Lions sides beforehand. We are very grateful to him and wish him the best for the future.”

Gould emphasized the importance of the upcoming international season, which includes bilateral series and two major ICC events.
“This is an exciting time for England Women. I look forward to seeing this team achieve new heights, and to continue driving the growth of women’s and girls’ cricket,” he said.

The ECB confirmed that updates regarding the appointment of a new Head Coach will be made in due course.

As one chapter ends, England Women will aim to carry forward the momentum built under Lewis’s leadership, as they look to challenge the very best in world cricket over the next 15 months.
