Manav Suthar Debut Wins Praise From Sunil Gavaskar After Impressive Performance Against Afghanistan
India's dominant position in the one-off Test against Afghanistan was strengthened by the emergence of a new spin talent as debutant Manav Suthar delivered a memorable all-round performance in New Chandigarh. The young left-arm spinner earned widespread praise from former India captain Sunil Gavaskar after producing a disciplined bowling display and contributing valuable runs with the bat.
Suthar's impressive outing has quickly become one of the major talking points of the India vs Afghanistan Test, with the youngster showcasing both composure and skill on the international stage.
Sunil Gavaskar Applauds Manav Suthar Debut
Speaking after the second day's play, Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the confidence shown by Suthar during his maiden Test appearance. According to the batting legend, the spinner not only impressed with the ball but also looked comfortable while batting in pressure situations.
Gavaskar pointed out that Suthar displayed positive footwork and a calm temperament at the crease, helping India add crucial lower-order runs. The former India captain believes such qualities are important for modern Test cricketers who are expected to contribute in multiple departments.
More importantly, Gavaskar praised Suthar's accuracy with the ball. The youngster consistently bowled disciplined lines and lengths, forcing Afghanistan's batters into mistakes and maintaining pressure throughout his spell.
Three Wickets Mark A Dream Start
The Rajasthan spinner finished with excellent figures of 3 for 21 and played a significant role in reducing Afghanistan to a difficult position by stumps on day two.
Suthar claimed the wickets of Abdul Malik, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Afsar Zazai. His ability to extract turn and maintain control allowed India to dominate the middle sessions of the match.
The debutant's performance was particularly impressive because he showed maturity beyond his years. Rather than searching for magic deliveries, he focused on consistency and patiently built pressure on the opposition batters.
His spell helped India tighten their grip on the contest after posting a massive first-innings total.
Prasidh Krishna Also Impresses
While Suthar grabbed the headlines, Gavaskar also praised fast bowler Prasidh Krishna for his intelligent approach.
Prasidh finished with figures of 2 for 27 and dismissed Sediqullah Atal and Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. Gavaskar noted that the pacer adapted well to the conditions by bowling fuller lengths instead of relying solely on bounce.
That adjustment allowed him to bring the ball back into the left-handers and create wicket-taking opportunities. His disciplined execution complemented Suthar's spin bowling perfectly.
India Maintain Complete Control
Earlier in the match, India built a commanding first-innings total of 564 for 8 declared. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a brilliant century, while KL Rahul also reached three figures.
Rishabh Pant added an entertaining 81, and Washington Sundar remained unbeaten on 52 to help India cross the 500-run mark comfortably.
With Afghanistan struggling at 113 for 5 and still trailing by 451 runs, India remain overwhelming favourites to secure victory. However, the biggest positive for the hosts may well be the successful arrival of Manav Suthar at the international level.
If his debut performance is any indication, India could have unearthed another promising spin option for the future of Test cricket.
