Red Ball Preparation During IPL

Speaking about his journey to the Indian Test team, Suthar revealed that he never stopped thinking about red-ball cricket, even during the Indian Premier League season.

The Gujarat Titans spinner admitted that once his name started being discussed around the national setup, he made a conscious effort to continue practicing with the red ball during IPL training sessions.

That preparation proved invaluable when India selected him for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh.

Suthar explained that red-ball cricket has always been his ultimate goal. From his early days in age-group cricket to his performances in the Ranji Trophy, representing India in Test cricket remained the dream he worked toward every day.

Emotional Debut Cap Moment

The young spinner also opened up about the emotional experience of receiving his first Test cap.

According to Suthar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill informed him that he would make his international debut. The moment fulfilled not only his own dream but also the aspirations of his family, especially his father.

Adding to the occasion was senior spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who presented Suthar with his Test cap and delivered a motivating speech before the match.

The support from teammates and coaches helped the youngster settle quickly and embrace the challenge of international cricket.

Historic Performance Against Afghanistan

Suthar justified the team's faith almost immediately.

Bowling on a surface that offered assistance to spinners, he displayed remarkable control, discipline, and patience. Rather than searching for magic deliveries, the left-armer focused on repeatedly hitting the same area and allowing the pitch to do the work.

His strategy worked brilliantly.

The spinner finished with exceptional figures of 6/33 in Afghanistan's first innings and became only the fifth Indian bowler to claim a five-wicket haul on Test debut.

He also joined an elite list of Indian spinners led by his idol Ravichandran Ashwin. Among Indian debutants, only Narendra Hirwani has recorded better match figures than Suthar.

The Debut Wicket That Meant Everything

Despite collecting six wickets in the innings, Suthar admitted that his very first Test wicket remains his favorite.

The youngster described it as a special moment that will stay with him forever. He revealed that a competitive battle had developed between him and the batter, making the breakthrough even more satisfying.

His success was built on a simple philosophy: bowl consistently, trust his stock delivery, and maintain discipline.

That approach not only delivered wickets but also showcased the maturity expected from an experienced international cricketer.

For Manav Suthar, the Afghanistan Test was more than just a debut. It was the realization of a lifelong dream and the beginning of what could be a bright future in Indian cricket. If his calm temperament, work ethic, and skill are any indication, this memorable debut may only be the first chapter of a promising Test career.
