MI Cape Town Crush Pretoria Capitals to Set New Betway SA20 Record
The Betway SA20 2025 league phase has concluded with MI Cape Town firmly stamping their authority as the tournament’s most dominant team. In a stunning display of power and precision, MI Cape Town annihilated Pretoria Capitals by 95 runs, securing a record-breaking 35 points in the league phase. Their unbeaten streak at Newlands mirrored that of Paarl Royals at Boland Park, making them one of only two teams to win all home matches this season.
This emphatic win showcased MI Cape Town’s extraordinary depth, as even with six changes to their squad, they were able to completely outplay the Capitals. The win also serves as the perfect statement of intent ahead of the SA20 Playoffs, where they will face Paarl Royals in Qualifier 1 at St George’s Park on February 4.
MI Cape Town’s Batting Fireworks Set the Stage
Despite resting key players, MI Cape Town’s new opening duo of Sediqullah Atal and Connor Esterhuizen took charge from the outset, forming a breathtaking 133-run partnership for the first wicket.
Their batting dominance was on full display, as they dismantled Pretoria Capitals’ bowling attack, leaving the visitors struggling to find answers.
Dane Piedt’s Dream Debut Stuns Capitals
If MI Cape Town’s batting was explosive, their bowling was equally devastating. The Capitals never found their footing in the chase, collapsing to 106 all out in just 14 overs. The star of the show was off-spinner Dane Piedt, making his SA20 debut for his home team.
Speaking after the game, Piedt expressed his joy at representing MI Cape Town on home soil:
“It has been amazing. I have grown up here and played in front of my wife, son, and parents. This is what we have been calling out for.”
MI Cape Town’s Spin Trio Dismantle Capitals
With Newlands offering plenty of turn, MI Cape Town’s spinners ran riot, sharing eight wickets for just 60 runs.
Their combined effort ensured MI Cape Town bowled out Pretoria Capitals for just 106 in 14 overs, sealing an emphatic 95-run victory.
Captain Colin Ingram Praises Team’s Dominance
With five consecutive wins at Newlands and a record-breaking 35 points, MI Cape Town have established themselves as the team to beat in SA20 2025.
Stand-in captain Colin Ingram reflected on the team’s journey, highlighting the overwhelming support from the fans:
“We have been well supported. The crowd has been fantastic. The first two years didn't go as per plan, but it has been extremely satisfying to see the crowd back. The team has been humbled by the support.”
He also credited the balanced team composition for their success:
“Really good players have played their roles. The left-right combinations open up both sides of the wicket. We have fed off each other’s performances and look forward to the playoffs.”
Road to the SA20 Final: MI Cape Town vs Paarl Royals
With the league stage now complete, MI Cape Town will face Paarl Royals in Qualifier 1 at St George’s Park on February 4. The winner will advance directly to the final at Wanderers on February 8, while the loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2.
The remaining two playoff teams, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings, will battle in the Eliminator at Centurion on February 5. The winner of the Eliminator will face the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2 for the final spot in the championship match.
