Marcus Stoinis Five Wicket Haul Goes in Vain as MI New York Beat Seattle Orcas in MLC 2026
Marcus Stoinis produced one of the finest bowling performances of the Major League Cricket 2026 season, but it was not enough to prevent MI New York from securing a thrilling 17-run victory over Seattle Orcas. Despite Marcus Stoinis claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 cricket, MI New York held their nerve to defend 179 and move into second place on the MLC 2026 points table.
The result dealt a significant blow to Seattle Orcas' playoff hopes while strengthening MI New York's chances of finishing among the top teams heading into the knockout stage.
The match belonged to Marcus Stoinis for much of the evening as the Australian all-rounder delivered a masterclass with the ball. Bowling with clever variations on a sluggish Dallas surface, Marcus Stoinis dismantled the MI New York batting lineup with exceptional control and accuracy.
He began by removing Ryan Rickelton before Nicholas Pooran's difficult tournament continued with another early dismissal. Shakib Al Hasan failed to capitalize on his opportunity, while Monank Patel also fell to Marcus Stoinis, who expertly mixed slower deliveries with accurate lengths.
When MI New York slipped to 73 for 5 in the 12th over, Seattle Orcas looked firmly in command. At that stage, Marcus Stoinis appeared destined to lead his side to an important victory with his outstanding bowling performance.
However, cricket once again proved to be a game of momentum shifts.
Veteran all-rounder Kieron Pollard joined hands with Tajinder Dhillon to launch a remarkable recovery. The experienced duo completely changed the course of the innings with an aggressive partnership worth 80 runs in less than seven overs.
Pollard played the role of aggressor before Dhillon took charge during the death overs. The left-hander punished anything loose and reached his maiden fifty of the tournament from just 22 deliveries. His unbeaten 66 proved invaluable as MI New York recovered to post a competitive total of 179 for 8.
Although Marcus Stoinis returned to dismiss Pollard, Romario Shepherd and Trent Boult in quick succession to complete his maiden T20 five-wicket haul, Dhillon's late assault ensured MI New York had enough runs on the board.
Chasing 180, Seattle Orcas looked comfortable for most of their innings.
Tim Seifert and Matthew Breetzke stitched together a brilliant century partnership that placed the Orcas in complete control. At 137 for 1 after 15 overs, only 43 runs were required from the final five overs, making Seattle overwhelming favourites.
But MI New York produced a sensational comeback.
Pollard provided the breakthrough by dismissing Breetzke with a slower delivery before celebrating passionately. Although he briefly left the field with a shoulder concern, the veteran soon returned to make another vital contribution by taking a catch to dismiss Shimron Hetmyer.
Romario Shepherd then delivered arguably the over of the match. He bowled Marcus Stoinis with a superb yorker before later dismissing the dangerous Tim Seifert, who had looked set for a match-winning century after scoring 88.
The pressure continued to build as MI New York's bowlers executed their plans brilliantly during the closing overs.
Hammad Azam briefly revived Seattle's hopes with a blazing 40 from only 19 balls, smashing three huge sixes to keep the chase alive. However, Pollard and Shepherd maintained their composure, while the experienced Caribbean duo ensured the required run rate kept climbing.
Pollard eventually closed out the contest as MI New York restricted Seattle Orcas to 162 for 6, completing one of the most dramatic victories of MLC 2026.
Despite finishing on the losing side, Marcus Stoinis emerged with plenty of credit. His outstanding figures of 5 for 46 showcased his ability to dominate in T20 cricket and highlighted his value as one of the world's premier all-rounders.
Unfortunately for Marcus Stoinis, Seattle's batting collapse overshadowed his remarkable effort. While his five-wicket haul will be remembered as one of the standout bowling performances of the tournament, MI New York's resilience ultimately proved decisive in a victory that could significantly shape the MLC 2026 playoff race.
