Nahid Rana Reflects on Missed Opportunity After Record Spell in Bangladesh Defeat
Nahid Rana delivered the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh bowler in One Day International cricket, but his historic performance could not prevent Zimbabwe from pulling off a stunning 25-run victory in the opening ODI of the three-match series.
The young fast bowler finished with sensational figures of 6 for 21, surpassing Mashrafe Mortaza's long-standing national record of 6 for 26 set against Kenya in 2006. Despite the remarkable achievement, Nahid Rana admitted that Bangladesh failed to capitalize on key moments, allowing Zimbabwe to recover from a difficult position and defend one of the lowest totals in ODI history.
Zimbabwe looked completely out of the contest after collapsing to 70 for 8 on a lively pitch. However, captain Richard Ngarava and Newman Nyamhuri produced a fighting ninth-wicket partnership worth 63 runs from 81 deliveries. Their determined stand lifted Zimbabwe to 141, a total that eventually proved enough as Bangladesh suffered one of their most disappointing batting performances in recent years.
Speaking after the match, Nahid Rana acknowledged that Bangladesh's batting unit let the team down despite the bowlers creating the perfect platform for victory.
He admitted that losing wickets in clusters during the chase prevented Bangladesh from building meaningful partnerships. According to Nahid Rana, a solid stand in the middle overs could have completely changed the outcome of the match.
The pacer also felt Bangladesh's bowlers relaxed slightly during Zimbabwe's final wicket partnership. He believed breaking that stand earlier would have restricted the hosts to an even smaller total and given Bangladesh a much easier chase.
Although Nahid Rana expressed satisfaction with his own rhythm, he made it clear that individual milestones hold little value without contributing to a team victory.
The speedster said he always enjoys bowling aggressively and tries to maximize every opportunity when conditions suit his style. However, he admitted the inability to finish the innings quickly ultimately cost Bangladesh the match.
The defeat will be particularly painful because Zimbabwe successfully defended just 141 runs, the fourth-lowest successful defense in ODI history. Bangladesh, meanwhile, registered their lowest unsuccessful chase in a completed 50-over ODI, highlighting the magnitude of the batting collapse.
Despite the disappointing result, Nahid Rana continued his impressive rise in international cricket by claiming his third five-wicket haul in One Day Internationals. His ability to consistently trouble batters with pace, bounce and accuracy has made him one of Bangladesh's most promising fast bowlers.
The youngster also addressed questions regarding his absence from Bangladesh's recent one-off Test against Zimbabwe. Nahid Rana clarified that missing the Test was part of a workload management plan rather than a selection issue.
He explained that the team management wanted him to prepare specifically for the white-ball leg of the tour, ensuring he remained fresh for the ODI series.
Looking ahead, Bangladesh will need to recover quickly if they hope to level the series. While Nahid Rana has given the bowling attack tremendous confidence with his record-breaking spell, the batting lineup must respond with greater discipline and composure in the remaining matches.
For Nahid Rana, the performance will remain a personal milestone, but the fast bowler made it clear that victories matter far more than records. His honest assessment reflected a player determined to learn from defeat and help Bangladesh bounce back stronger.
As the series progresses, Bangladesh will hope that Nahid Rana continues his outstanding form with the ball while the batting unit finds the consistency needed to support one of the finest bowling performances in the country's ODI history.
