Pratika Rawal Ruled Out of England Test Due to Knee Injury
India have suffered a major setback ahead of their historic one-off Test against England at Lord's, with Pratika Rawal ruled out after sustaining a knee injury. The talented top-order batter will miss one of the biggest matches of her young international career, forcing the Indian team management to make a late change to the squad.
Head coach Amol Muzumdar confirmed that Pratika Rawal suffered a cut on her knee that required stitches, making her unavailable for selection. In her place, experienced batter Priya Punia has been drafted into the squad and is immediately available for the landmark Test beginning on July 10.
The absence of Pratika Rawal comes as a disappointment for India, especially considering the impressive impact she has made since breaking into international cricket. The youngster has quickly established herself as one of India's brightest batting prospects with her composure, stroke play, and ability to build innings under pressure.
During India's memorable ICC Women's Cricket World Cup triumph on home soil, Pratika Rawal played a significant role at the top of the batting order. She produced several valuable performances, including her maiden World Cup century, before an ankle injury forced her to miss the knockout stages of the tournament.
Now, another injury interrupts her growing international journey just before one of the most prestigious fixtures in women's cricket.
The Indian team has moved swiftly to name Priya Punia as Rawal's replacement. The right-handed batter arrives in England after an impressive India A tour, where she showcased remarkable consistency by scoring two half-centuries against England A.
Although Priya Punia is yet to make her Test debut, her recent performances have demonstrated both temperament and technical ability, particularly in English conditions. Having already spent valuable time adapting to local pitches and weather, she could prove to be an important addition for India.
The coaching staff will be hopeful that Punia can seamlessly slot into the batting lineup and provide stability at the top of the order.
Despite losing Pratika Rawal, India still possess a strong and experienced squad led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana continues to be one of the world's premier batters, while Shafali Varma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, Sneh Rana and Harleen Deol add quality across all departments.
The Lord's Test carries immense historical significance. It will be the first-ever women's Test match played at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, widely regarded as the Home of Cricket. For India, it will also be only their second Test appearance of the calendar year, making preparation and squad depth extremely important.
Although Pratika Rawal will not be part of this special occasion, her recovery will remain a priority for the Indian medical staff. At a young age, she has already shown the potential to become a key figure in India's batting lineup for years to come.
For now, attention shifts to Priya Punia, who has earned this opportunity through consistent performances and determination. The upcoming Test presents a golden chance for her to establish herself at the highest level while helping India challenge England in one of the most anticipated matches in women's cricket.
India will undoubtedly miss Pratika Rawal, but the squad has enough experience and depth to remain competitive. Fans will now be hoping for a quick recovery for the promising batter while eagerly awaiting another memorable chapter in Indian women's cricket at the historic Lord's Cricket Ground.
