Priya Punia Replaces Injured Pratika Rawal in India's Squad for England Test
Priya Punia has earned a well-deserved call-up to India's Test squad after replacing the injured Pratika Rawal for the upcoming one-off Test against England at Lord's. The announcement came from the Women's Selection Committee following confirmation that Rawal would not recover in time from a knee injury sustained during the recent India A tour of England.
The inclusion of Priya Punia rewards her outstanding performances for India A, where she finished as the leading run-scorer during the three-match One-Day series against England A. Her consistent batting played a crucial role in helping India A secure an impressive 2-1 series victory, making her selection a natural choice ahead of the prestigious Test match.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Pratika Rawal suffered a laceration around her right knee while fielding during the second One-Day match against England A in Taunton. Medical assessments later revealed that she would not recover in time for the Test, forcing the selectors to seek a replacement.
With Priya Punia already in excellent form on English conditions, the selectors moved quickly to include the experienced top-order batter in the senior squad.
The promotion of Priya Punia reflects her excellent performances throughout the India A series. The stylish right-handed batter accumulated 171 runs across three matches, finishing as the highest run-getter of the series. Her ability to adapt to English pitches, play long innings, and provide stability at the top of the order made her one of India's standout performers during the tour.
Those performances have now earned Priya Punia another opportunity to represent India in the longest format of the game. With conditions at Lord's expected to favour disciplined batting, her recent experience in England could prove extremely valuable for the visitors.
India will head into the one-off Test with an experienced core led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana will once again shoulder responsibility at the top of the batting order, while established stars such as Shafali Varma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh and Sneh Rana provide balance across both batting and bowling departments.
The addition of Priya Punia further strengthens India's batting resources. Having already adjusted to local conditions during the India A tour, she arrives with confidence and valuable match practice that could benefit the team in a challenging overseas Test.
The upcoming Lord's Test is another important chapter in the India Women's Tour of England, with both teams eager to make a strong statement in the red-ball format. India will be hoping to build on the momentum generated by the India A team's recent success, where Priya Punia emerged as one of the standout performers.
Her selection also highlights the importance of India A tours in preparing players for international cricket. Strong domestic performances combined with consistent displays against quality opposition continue to provide talented cricketers with opportunities to progress into the senior national team.
Although Pratika Rawal's injury is an unfortunate setback, it opens the door for Priya Punia to showcase her abilities on one of cricket's biggest stages. A successful performance at Lord's could further strengthen her position within India's Test plans going forward.
