Punjab Kings playoff qualification scenarios: What PBKS need after 13 points, two games left | IPL 2026

PBKS must win their remaining matches to stay alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race.

Punjab Kings playoff qualification scenarios: What PBKS need after 13 points, two games left | IPL 2026

Punjab Kings are still very much in the playoff conversation, but the margin for error has now become extremely small. After the latest points table update, PBKS sit on 13 points from 12 matches and have two league games left — against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants.

In an IPL season where the top four teams qualify, PBKS must finish high on points first, and then rely on net run rate (NRR) if teams are tied. Right now, they are in a tricky position because the teams above them are already strong, and several others are still capable of climbing into the top four.

RCB and Gujarat Titans are already on 16 points, Sunrisers Hyderabad are on 14, while Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings are on 12. That means Punjab Kings cannot afford to slip in either of their remaining matches.

PBKS’ current situation

PBKS are currently in a competitive but vulnerable position. They have enough points to stay alive, but not enough to feel safe. With only two matches left, the maximum they can reach is 17 points if they win both games.

That is the safest route and, realistically, the best one.

What PBKS need to qualify

1. Win both remaining matches
This is the strongest and most direct path. If Punjab Kings beat RCB and LSG, they move to 17 points and should remain firmly in the race for a top-four finish. However, even 17 may not be a total guarantee, because RCB, GT, SRH and RR still have routes to finish on 18 or more. So PBKS would still need favorable results elsewhere and a decent NRR.

2. Win one, lose one
If PBKS win just one of the two remaining matches, they finish on 15 points. That is a dangerous position. It keeps them mathematically alive, but qualification would then depend heavily on other results and NRR. In a tight points table, 15 may not be enough.

3. Lose both
If Punjab Kings lose to both RCB and LSG, their campaign likely ends there. They would stay on 13 points, which is almost certainly not enough for a top-four spot.

Why the RCB match is so important

The game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru is the most important fixture for Punjab Kings. RCB are already on 16 points, so a PBKS win would not only improve their own chances, but also stop one of the direct rivals from pulling away.

A win over RCB would take Punjab to 15 points and damage Bengaluru’s push for the top two. A loss, however, would make PBKS’ path far more difficult, because they would then need to beat LSG and hope for multiple results to go their way.

Other matches PBKS will watch closely

PBKS will also keep an eye on the results involving:

  • Gujarat Titans

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad

  • Rajasthan Royals

  • Chennai Super Kings

These teams can all affect the playoff cut-off. If too many of them keep winning, the qualification mark could rise beyond 16 or 17, which would make life harder for Punjab Kings.

PBKS playoff scenarios in simple terms

If PBKS win both:
They finish on 17 points and stay strongly alive.

If PBKS win one and lose one:
They finish on 15 points and need help from other teams.

If PBKS lose both:
They are likely out of the playoff race.

Punjab Kings are still in the hunt, but they are now in a must-win phase. Their playoff hopes depend on how they handle the next two games, especially the clash against RCB. Win both, and the dream stays alive. Slip once, and the path becomes very narrow. Lose twice, and the campaign is likely over.

PBKS do not need a miracle yet — but they do need a strong finish.
