MI Cape Town’s Explosive Batting Seals Pretoria Capitals' Fate in Betway SA20
The Betway SA20 delivered another high-octane encounter as MI Cape Town knocked Pretoria Capitals out of the tournament with a dominant 27-run victory at a sold-out Centurion. In a match that saw 417 runs scored, MI Cape Town’s Reeza Hendricks and Dewald Brevis stole the show with a sensational 142-run partnership, ensuring their team’s progression to the playoffs while ending Pretoria Capitals’ campaign.
The thrilling contest, reminiscent of last season’s record-breaking run-fest at the same venue, saw both sides unleash their firepower. However, it was MI Cape Town who proved too strong, setting a daunting 222/3, leaving the Capitals short despite their valiant effort in the chase. With this result, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings have officially secured their spots in the Eliminator alongside MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals.
Reeza Hendricks and Dewald Brevis Power MI Cape Town to 222/3
MI Cape Town started their innings in aggressive fashion, with Rassie van der Dussen (30 off 22 balls) and Ryan Rickelton (22 off 13 balls) hammering 45 runs in just 4.4 overs. Their explosive start set the stage for an extraordinary batting masterclass from Hendricks and Brevis.
Hendricks showcased his signature elegance and timing, complementing the raw power of Brevis in a magnificent 142-run unbeaten stand. Hendricks’ innings of 77 off 44 balls, laced with four fours and five sixes, was a lesson in calculated aggression. Meanwhile, Brevis, living up to his reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in world cricket, smashed 73 off just 32 balls, including six fours and six sixes.
For Brevis, this was a special innings. “I'm absolutely happy for us to have a few wins on the bounce and play beautiful cricket. I am so excited for the boys! We played so great as a team, and it's even better off the field,” he said. Reflecting on his approach, he added, “I'm playing the way I was playing when I was a little boy. There was a time when I tried too many things, but now I’m just watching the ball and enjoying the game.”
With their explosive batting display, MI Cape Town posted a mammoth 222/3, putting immense pressure on the Capitals in their do-or-die clash.
Pretoria Capitals Fall Short Despite Will Smeed’s Fifty
Chasing 223 for survival, Pretoria Capitals needed a strong start, but MI Cape Town’s bowling attack ensured they never got ahead of the required run rate. English batter Will Smeed fought valiantly, striking his second half-century of the competition with a well-crafted 52 off 36 balls, including nine boundaries. However, key wickets at crucial moments derailed the chase.
“We batted nicely in parts but just didn't find the rhythm,” admitted Capitals captain Kyle Verreynne. “Key wickets at key times left us short. I think it was a good wicket, and I think we had a chance we just didn't pull it off.”
The Capitals finished at 195/8, falling 27 runs short and confirming their exit from the tournament. Reflecting on their campaign, Verreynne pointed to a packed early schedule that made it difficult to gain momentum. “Our first five games came in 8-9 days. If you don't get off to a good start, it's tough to bring that back. We played nice cricket but lost games along the way, which is disappointing. It's been tough to get that rhythm and momentum. That's why we are where we are.”
Final Four Teams Confirmed for Playoffs
With this result, the final four teams for the Betway SA20 playoffs are officially set. Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town will meet in Qualifier 1 at St George’s Park, while Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Joburg Super Kings will face off in the Eliminator at Centurion. The road to the final is now clearer, with only one team set to lift the prestigious trophy on February 8.
Before heading into the high-stakes playoffs, MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals will meet once again at Newlands. However, this time, the Capitals will only be playing for pride, while MI Cape Town will look to continue their winning momentum before their crucial clash against the Royals.
As the tournament enters its decisive phase, one thing is certain Betway SA20 has once again delivered an electrifying season of cricket. With MI Cape Town peaking at the right time and the other teams eager to fight for glory, the playoffs promise to be an unmissable spectacle.
