Sai Sudharsan Creates IPL History, Fastest to 20 Scores of 30+ in Just 28 Innings
The IPL has always been a stage where young talent flourishes, and in IPL 2025, Sai Sudharsan is rewriting what consistency means in T20 cricket. On a night when Gujarat Titans cruised to an eight-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru, it was Sai Sudharsan’s composed 49 off 36 balls that quietly but powerfully carved his name into the record books. With this knock, he became the fastest player in IPL history to register 20 scores of 30 or more runs, achieving the feat in just 28 innings.
That’s not just a statistic it’s a reflection of a young batter with temperament, timing, and tremendous potential.
A Landmark Knock at Chinnaswamy
Facing RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Gujarat Titans were chasing a target of 170. Sai Sudharsan walked in as usual with his calm presence at the top, stroking the ball elegantly and finding gaps at will. He hit seven fours and a six, timing his innings beautifully to stabilize the chase early and build a platform for Jos Buttler and Sherfane Rutherford to finish the job.
His 49 wasn’t just another number. It was his 20th 30-plus score in IPL cricket, and it came in just his 28th innings breaking the previous record held by Shaun Marsh, who had 19 such scores after 28 innings. Legends like Matthew Hayden and Lendl Simmons managed only 18 in that span. Sai now sits at the very top of that elite list.
Consistency Like Never Before
What makes this record even more striking is the sheer consistency with which Sai Sudharsan has approached the IPL since his debut. Out of 28 innings played, he has crossed the 30-run mark 20 times a staggering conversion rate for any format, let alone the T20 chaos of IPL.
And there’s more. He holds the record for fewest single-digit scores (just one!) in a player’s first 28 IPL innings. In a league where even experienced internationals struggle with form and pressure, Sai’s ability to avoid low scores is a testament to his technique, mindset, and maturity.
Almost Another Record But Just One Run Short
Sai Sudharsan came agonizingly close to setting another unique IPL record. Having already scored half-centuries in his first two games of IPL 2025 against Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings he was on the verge of becoming the first player ever to register three consecutive 50+ scores to start an IPL season.
Needing just one more run to make that history, he was dismissed for 49. The disappointment was visible, but so was the applause. The knock still mattered, and it further solidified his role as Gujarat Titans’ batting mainstay this season.
Rising in the Race for the Orange Cap
After his latest performance, Sai Sudharsan now has 187 runs in IPL 2025, surpassing Shreyas Iyer to become the highest-scoring Indian batter of the tournament so far. Only Nicholas Pooran (189 runs) sits ahead of him in the race for the Orange Cap, and Sai is breathing down his neck.
It’s not hard to imagine that if Sai had scored three more runs that evening, he’d be wearing the cap already. But with the form he’s in, it feels inevitable he’ll take that spot soon. He’s not just chasing numbers he’s setting standards.
A Product of Systematic Growth
Sai Sudharsan’s journey from Tamil Nadu domestic cricket to the IPL spotlight has been anything but accidental. Having shown promise in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and TNPL, he earned his spot with Gujarat Titans in 2022. What followed was a gradual and disciplined growth.
In IPL 2023 and 2024, he was consistent, often the glue in the middle order. But in 2025, he’s evolved into an opener who does more than survive the powerplay he thrives in it. His technique allows him to rotate strike effortlessly, and his clean hitting against both pace and spin ensures he can accelerate when needed.
The Titans’ Silent Superstar
Gujarat Titans are a franchise filled with star power. Jos Buttler, Rashid Khan, Shubman Gill these are big names. But it’s Sai Sudharsan who’s been their most reliable and underrated performer. He’s not the loudest, but he’s often the most effective.
And in a league like IPL, that kind of silent dominance is invaluable. It gives the flamboyant finishers like Buttler and Tewatia the freedom to play their natural games, knowing the top order is anchored.
What's Next for Sai
With the form he’s carrying and the confidence he’s exuding, the rest of IPL 2025 could become his playground. The Orange Cap is well within reach, and so is a strong case for a permanent slot in the Indian T20I setup.
If selectors are looking for a consistent, composed left-hander with the ability to adapt to various situations, Sai Sudharsan checks every box. And if he continues this purple patch, he might not just be a star of this IPL but of Indian cricket for years to come.
