Sanju Samson has become the biggest talking point after India's squad for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe was announced. The wicketkeeper-batter, who played a crucial role in India's successful ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, has been left out of the 15-member squad without an official explanation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The omission of Sanju Samson has surprised many cricket followers, especially considering he remains part of India's full-strength squad for the 2026 Asian Games later this year. Whether the decision is based on workload management or team selection remains unclear, but it has certainly sparked widespread debate among fans and experts.

India have named Shreyas Iyer as captain for the three-match T20I series in Zimbabwe, while Tilak Varma has been appointed vice-captain. The squad features several fresh faces alongside established performers, highlighting the selectors' intention to build depth ahead of future international assignments.

The absence of Sanju Samson comes shortly after he endured a difficult run during India's tour of Ireland and England. The experienced opener managed scores of 5, 0 and 1 across his last three T20I innings before losing his place in the playing XI for the second T20I against England.

His replacement, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, became India's youngest men's international cricketer and immediately attracted attention with his fearless approach. While Sanju Samson has struggled recently, his exclusion remains surprising considering his outstanding performances just months earlier.

Before the IPL 2026 season, Sanju Samson was instrumental in India's T20 World Cup triumph. He scored three consecutive half-centuries during the tournament and was named Player of the Tournament after consistently delivering under pressure.

Despite those heroics, the selectors have opted for a different combination in Zimbabwe, introducing several new players into the national setup.

Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh has received his maiden T20I call-up following an impressive IPL campaign in which he scored 510 runs at a strike rate approaching 169. Fast bowlers Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma also earned their first international selections after strong performances for India A and in domestic cricket.

Left-arm all-rounder Harsh Dubey continues his rapid rise after already breaking into India's Test and ODI squads. Meanwhile, Rinku Singh and express pacer Mayank Yadav have returned to the T20I setup after missing recent international assignments.

Although the spotlight remains firmly on Sanju Samson, India's squad still boasts considerable experience through players like Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Varun Chakaravarthy and Prince Yadav.

Alongside the T20I announcement, the selectors also confirmed a change to India's ODI squad for the ongoing England series. Shivam Dube has replaced the injured Nitish Kumar Reddy, who continues his rehabilitation from a quadriceps injury.

There was also positive news regarding Virat Kohli, who has successfully completed his fitness assessment after recovering from a hamstring injury. Kohli is now available for the ODI series against England after receiving medical clearance.

For Sanju Samson, however, the immediate future remains uncertain. The wicketkeeper-batter will now have to wait for another opportunity to reclaim his place in India's T20I setup. Given his proven match-winning ability and recent World Cup success, few would expect him to remain out of contention for long.

India begin their Zimbabwe tour on July 23 in Harare, followed by matches on July 25 and July 26. While the series offers exciting opportunities for several emerging talents, much of the discussion leading into the tour will continue to revolve around the absence of Sanju Samson and what it means for India's long-term T20 plans.
