Sanju Samson Chooses Self Belief Over Criticism as He Defines His Own Cricket Journey
Sanju Samson has never been short of talent, but his international career has often been surrounded by debates over consistency, opportunities and selection. Now, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter has made it clear that he is no longer interested in living under the weight of public opinion. Instead, Sanju Samson wants to enjoy cricket on his own terms, trusting his instincts rather than chasing approval from critics or selectors.
Speaking about his journey, Sanju Samson admitted that he consciously decided before the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup to step away from what he described as the constant "rat race" surrounding Indian cricket. Rather than worrying about competition for a place in the national side, he chose to focus on playing with freedom and expressing himself naturally.
According to Sanju Samson, every cricketer reaches a stage where external opinions become overwhelming. Having experienced periods of being in and out of the Indian team, he realized that trying to satisfy everyone was impossible. As a result, he decided to stop worrying about what others expected from him and instead concentrate on enjoying the sport that has shaped his career.
The experienced batter said that while he deeply respects the game and values representing India, Sanju Samson believes no one should dictate how he approaches batting. He emphasized that he wants to remain a good teammate, contribute whenever the team requires him and continue playing with confidence, but ultimately he wants to make his own decisions at the crease.
Reflecting on his international career, Sanju Samson acknowledged that he never expected to feature in the 2026 T20 World Cup immediately after the 2024 edition. There was a period when he was not even part of India's plans, making it difficult to look too far into the future. Instead of worrying about tournaments years ahead, he has adopted a simple philosophy—perform well, stay prepared and allow opportunities to come naturally.
One of the defining moments discussed by Sanju Samson was India's T20 World Cup semifinal against England. Before the match, several people reminded him of his previous struggles against England fast bowler Jofra Archer. Rather than allowing those statistics to affect his confidence, Samson remained calm and trusted the preparation he had put in before the game.
He explained that he had developed complete faith in his own abilities following an important innings against the West Indies earlier in the tournament. That performance strengthened his belief, removing any doubts from his mind. Entering the semifinal, Sanju Samson was convinced he was a different player compared to the previous year and was determined to perform for his country regardless of past records.
The Kerala cricketer also reflected on the responsibility he carried during India's successful T20 World Cup campaign. As one of the team's leading run-scorers, he understood that consistent contributions were necessary, especially when other members of the batting lineup were searching for rhythm. He reminded himself throughout the tournament that staying at the crease and finishing matches for India was his primary responsibility.
For Sanju Samson, form is temporary, but confidence and preparation remain within a player's control. He believes every cricketer experiences ups and downs, and the key is to remain mentally strong during difficult phases rather than becoming distracted by criticism.
As Sanju Samson looks ahead to the next chapter of his career, his message is simple and confident. He will continue playing fearless cricket, back his instincts and enjoy every opportunity to represent India. Whether he is selected regularly or faces further challenges, Sanju Samson is determined to stay true to himself, believing that authenticity and self-belief will always outweigh external noise in the long run.
