Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Must Earn India Debut Says Dinesh Karthik

The debate over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's international debut continues to divide the cricketing world, but former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik believes patience remains the best approach. While many former cricketers have urged Team India to hand the teenage sensation an immediate opportunity, Karthik has backed the team management's decision to continue with experienced opener Sanju Samson.

Speaking after India's opening T20I against England, Karthik acknowledged the excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi but insisted that established performers deserve continued backing before any major changes are made.

Karthik Backs Sanju Samson Despite Lean Patch

Sanju Samson has endured a difficult run with the bat, registering three consecutive failures across the Ireland and England series. His struggles have naturally intensified calls for Sooryavanshi to be included in the playing XI.

However, Karthik believes recent performances should not overshadow Samson's outstanding contribution to India's successful ICC Men's T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year.

The former India wicketkeeper pointed out that Samson played several match-winning innings during the tournament, including crucial knocks against West Indies in the Super Eights, England in the semi-final and New Zealand in the final.

According to Karthik, players who deliver on the biggest stages deserve trust during temporary dips in form rather than being dropped immediately after a few poor outings.

Sooryavanshi's Talent Is Undeniable

Even while supporting Samson, Karthik made it clear that he has no doubts about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's enormous potential.

The 15-year-old has emerged as one of India's brightest young batting prospects after a sensational 2026 season. His remarkable IPL campaign for Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed 776 runs, earned widespread praise and a maiden India call-up.

He also grabbed headlines by smashing the fastest List A fifty in just 11 balls, further strengthening his reputation as one of the country's most exciting young talents.

Despite those achievements, Sooryavanshi has remained on the bench throughout the Ireland T20Is and the opening match against England.

Earning the Right Opportunity

Karthik believes international cricket demands patience, even for extraordinary talents.

While acknowledging that the cricketing world is eager to watch Sooryavanshi in Indian colours, he stressed that earning a place in the national team involves more than impressive domestic performances.

He argued that Team India must maintain consistency in selection by rewarding players who have already delivered under pressure. Such an approach not only strengthens dressing-room confidence but also reassures current players that their performances will be valued over time.

Tilak Varma Also Faces Pressure

Karthik also highlighted that Samson is not the only player under scrutiny.

Vice-captain Tilak Varma has also come under pressure despite scoring a half-century during the Ireland series. While Tilak managed valuable runs, Karthik felt his strike rate and inability to consistently find boundaries have become areas of concern, particularly in English conditions where batting in the middle overs can be challenging.

With competition for places increasing, every batter in India's middle order knows that consistent performances will be essential over the remainder of the England tour.

Selection Debate Continues

The discussion surrounding Sooryavanshi has created two distinct schools of thought within the cricket community.

Former stars such as AB de Villiers, Ravi Shastri, Michael Vaughan, and Alastair Cook have all argued that the teenager deserves an immediate opportunity based on his exceptional performances.

On the other hand, voices like Dinesh Karthik believe Team India should avoid making emotional decisions and instead continue backing experienced players who have already proven themselves on the international stage.

India Faces Important Decisions Ahead

As India prepares for the remaining matches of the England T20I series, the pressure on the batting unit will only continue to grow. Every innings by Samson and the middle order will inevitably be compared against the growing anticipation surrounding Sooryavanshi.

Whenever the youngster finally receives his India cap, expectations will be enormous. Until then, the selection debate is likely to remain one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket, with Karthik urging patience while fans continue to wait for the arrival of the country's next batting sensation.
