Veda Krishnamurthy Says Marizanne Kapp Reprieves Cost India in Womens T20 World Cup Loss
India's Women's T20 World Cup campaign has reached a critical stage after a six-wicket defeat to South Africa, and former India batter Veda Krishnamurthy believes missed opportunities in the field were the biggest reason behind the disappointing result. Speaking after the match at Old Trafford in Manchester, Veda pointed to the three dropped chances offered to Marizanne Kapp, insisting they changed the course of the contest and ultimately handed the Proteas a memorable victory.
With India now facing must-win encounters against Bangladesh and Australia, the former cricketer has also suggested changes to the playing XI to strengthen the bowling attack.
Marizanne Kapp Punishes Costly Fielding Errors
South Africa needed a special innings to chase down India's competitive total of 158, and Marizanne Kapp delivered exactly that. The experienced all-rounder remained unbeaten on 81 from just 45 balls, anchoring the chase with confidence and composure.
However, Veda Krishnamurthy believes the innings could have ended much earlier if India had converted their chances.
According to Veda, Kapp received three reprieves during her stay at the crease and made India pay by producing a match-winning performance. She emphasized that T20 cricket is often decided by key moments, and India's inability to hold onto crucial catches proved to be the defining factor.
More Trust Needed in Prema Rawat
While India's bowling attack showed promise, especially through left-arm spinner Shree Charani, Veda felt the team management could have shown greater faith in debut leg-spinner Prema Rawat.
She argued that an additional over from the leg-spinner during the middle phase could have created uncertainty for South Africa's right-handed batters, as the ball turning away naturally increases the chances of mistakes.
Despite Shree Charani's impressive spell that briefly brought India back into the contest, Kapp's counterattack ensured South Africa regained complete control and crossed the finish line with confidence.
Veda Calls for Two Key Changes
Looking ahead to India's crucial group-stage fixtures, Veda Krishnamurthy recommended the inclusion of pace bowler Kranti Gaud and left-arm spinner Radha Yadav.
She believes Kranti possesses the ability to take wickets with the new ball, an area where India need greater impact during the Powerplay. Early breakthroughs could help reduce pressure on the middle overs and prevent opposition batters from settling.
Veda also backed Radha Yadav despite her dropped catches, highlighting her value as an all-round cricketer who offers an additional left-arm spin option and contributes in multiple departments.
The former batter suggested that if Yastika Bhatia is not batting at number three, India would benefit more from selecting a versatile player like Radha.
India Face Must Win Situation
The defeat has left India's semi-final hopes hanging in the balance. Harmanpreet Kaur's side must now overcome Bangladesh before facing a formidable Australian team in what could be a virtual knockout encounter.
While Shree Charani's emergence remains a positive takeaway, Veda Krishnamurthy believes sharper fielding, tactical bowling changes and a refreshed playing XI will be essential if India are to keep their Women's T20 World Cup dream alive.
