Womens T20 World Cup 2026 Australia Bowlers Dominate West Indies in Semifinal

The Womens T20 World Cup 2026 witnessed another clinical performance from six-time champions Australia as they delivered a disciplined bowling display to restrict West Indies to 125/7 in the first semifinal at The Oval in London.

Led brilliantly by captain Sophie Molineux, Australia combined accurate bowling, sharp fielding, and intelligent tactics to keep the dangerous West Indies batting lineup under constant pressure. Ashleigh Gardner and Georgia Wareham were equally impressive, claiming two wickets each as the Australians strengthened their bid for another World Cup final appearance.

Australia Make the Perfect Start

Winning the toss and opting to bowl first on a green surface proved to be the perfect decision for Australia. Their pace attack exploited the early conditions by maintaining disciplined lines and lengths, making stroke play difficult for the West Indies openers.

Despite the pressure, captain Hayley Matthews looked composed at the crease. Alongside Qiana Joseph, she carefully negotiated the opening overs as West Indies reached 35 without loss at the end of the powerplay.

Although the scoreboard looked healthy, Australia's bowlers never allowed the batters to settle completely, forcing them to work hard for every run.

Matthews Falls as Australia Trigger Collapse

The turning point came in the ninth over when Sophie Molineux dismissed Hayley Matthews for a well-made 30. Her wicket completely shifted the momentum in Australia's favour.

From a comfortable 47 without loss, West Indies suddenly slipped into deep trouble as wickets tumbled rapidly.

Qiana Joseph managed only 16 before departing, while experienced campaigner Stafanie Taylor and youngster Jahzara Claxton were both dismissed without scoring. Within a matter of overs, West Indies had collapsed to 59/4, leaving their hopes of posting a competitive total hanging by a thread.

Australia's spin trio squeezed the middle order brilliantly, denying boundaries and forcing risky shots.

Gardner and Wareham Tighten the Grip

Ashleigh Gardner once again showcased why she remains one of Australia's most dependable all-rounders. Mixing flight, pace, and accuracy, Gardner finished with impressive figures of 2 for 13 while constantly building pressure through economical bowling.

Georgia Wareham complemented her perfectly by claiming 2 for 17, using her variations effectively to dismantle the middle order.

Captain Sophie Molineux also led from the front, picking up two important wickets while maintaining control throughout her spell.

Annabel Sutherland chipped in with one wicket to complete a superb collective bowling effort.

Dottin Provides Late Resistance

Veteran all-rounder Deandra Dottin was the lone bright spot for the West Indies.

After briefly leaving the field earlier, Dottin returned with positive intent and played a valuable unbeaten knock of 26 from just 16 deliveries. Her aggressive stroke play in the closing overs helped the Caribbean side recover from a difficult position.

Shemaine Campbelle contributed 22, while Glasgow added 15 before being dismissed off the final delivery of the innings.

Their late contributions helped West Indies reach 125/7, although the total still appeared below par considering Australia's batting strength.

Australia Firm Favourites

Australia's bowling unit once again highlighted why they remain one of the strongest teams in women's cricket.

Every bowler executed the game plan perfectly, preventing partnerships from developing and applying relentless scoreboard pressure. Their ability to strike immediately after key breakthroughs ensured West Indies never regained momentum.

With a target of 126 to chase, Australia entered the second innings as overwhelming favourites to secure another place in the Womens T20 World Cup 2026 final.

If their batting unit matches the discipline shown by the bowlers, the six-time champions will move one step closer to adding yet another ICC trophy to their remarkable collection.
