Womens T20 World Cup N Shree Charani Creates History as Indias Highest Wicket Taker in a Single Edition

India's young left-arm spinner N Shree Charani continues to light up the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 with a series of outstanding performances. On Thursday, the 21-year-old etched her name into the record books by becoming India's highest wicket-taker in a single edition of the Women's T20 World Cup during the Group A clash against Bangladesh at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Already enjoying a dream tournament, Charani added another milestone to her rapidly growing career by surpassing a long-standing Indian record held by legendary spinner Poonam Yadav.

Charani Breaks Poonam Yadav's Record

The historic moment arrived in the final over of Bangladesh's innings.

On the fourth ball of the 20th over, Bangladesh batter Shorna Akter attempted an aggressive shot after stepping out of her crease. However, she failed to time the delivery and was caught comfortably by Renuka Singh at cover-point.

The dismissal gave Charani her 11th wicket of the tournament, moving her past Poonam Yadav's previous Indian record of 10 wickets, which was set during the 2020 Women's T20 World Cup.

Remarkably, Charani wasn't finished yet.

Just one delivery later, she struck again to dismiss another Bangladesh batter, finishing with 12 wickets in the tournament and extending her newly created Indian record.

Dream Tournament Continues

Charani has been India's standout bowler throughout the tournament.

Before facing Bangladesh, she had already climbed to the No. 1 position in the ICC Women's T20I Bowling Rankings, becoming the world's top-ranked T20I bowler for the first time in her career.

Her remarkable rise has been built on consistent match-winning performances.

She announced herself with a brilliant four-wicket haul against the Netherlands before following it up with another impressive three-wicket spell against South Africa. Against Bangladesh, she once again delivered under pressure by returning during the death overs to break crucial partnerships and restrict the opposition to 136 for 8.

Her ability to bowl accurately in every phase of the innings has made her one of the biggest stars of the competition.

Climbing the All Time World Cup Charts

Charani's 12-wicket haul is not only an Indian record but also one of the finest performances in Women's T20 World Cup history.

Her tally currently stands as the joint fourth-highest wicket count in a single edition of the tournament.

She has now overtaken several legendary Indian bowlers, including:

  • Poonam Yadav – 10 wickets (2020)

  • Diana David – 9 wickets (2010)

  • Poonam Yadav – 8 wickets (2014 & 2018)

  • Radha Yadav – 8 wickets (2018)

The achievement highlights how quickly Charani has established herself as one of India's premier spin bowlers.

Amelia Kerr's Record Within Reach

With India still having matches left in the tournament, Charani now has a realistic opportunity to challenge the all-time Women's T20 World Cup record.

New Zealand spinner Amelia Kerr currently holds the record for the most wickets in a single edition, having claimed 15 wickets.

Needing just four more wickets to surpass that landmark, Charani has every chance of creating another piece of history if she continues her sensational form.

Given the confidence she has shown throughout the competition, the milestone appears well within reach.

A New Star for Indian Cricket

N Shree Charani's performances have been one of the biggest success stories of the Women's T20 World Cup 2026.

At just 21 years of age, she has already become the world's No. 1 T20I bowler, India's most successful bowler in a single World Cup campaign and one of the tournament's leading wicket-takers.

Her control, composure and ability to deliver in crucial moments have transformed India's bowling attack and strengthened the team's hopes of lifting the Women's T20 World Cup trophy.

If Charani maintains this remarkable form in the knockout stages, she could not only lead India to World Cup glory but also rewrite more records before the tournament concludes. Her incredible journey is only just beginning, and Indian cricket has undoubtedly found its next spin sensation.
