Day 3: Stumps – Australia need 522 runs to win

India began the day at 172/0, with Jaiswal and KL Rahul looking to consolidate. While Rahul missed out on a well-deserved century, falling for 77, Jaiswal continued his dream run, scoring a commanding 161. His innings was studded with 15 fours and 3 sixes. However, he fell short of a double-century, slicing a catch to point.

Kohli entered the fray with intent and composure. Anchoring the innings as wickets fell around him, he found a vital partner in Washington Sundar (29) before accelerating in a late blitz. Kohli’s unbeaten 100, his seventh century in Australia, came as a relief after a lean patch in the format.

Nitish Reddy’s quickfire 38 added to Australia’s misery before India declared, confident in their ability to exploit a deteriorating pitch.

With a fresh ball and 20 minutes to bowl before stumps, Jasprit Bumrah delivered yet again, trapping Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne LBW with precision. Mohammed Siraj joined the party by removing Pat Cummins, leaving Australia shell-shocked at 12/3 by the close of play.

Milestones of the Day

  • Virat Kohli’s Century: Kohli’s 100 was his 81st international ton and 10th across formats in Australia, the most by any visiting batter.
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal: Jaiswal became the youngest Indian opener to score a 150+ score in Australia.
  • Historic Improvement: India’s second-innings total of 487 is their third-highest improvement from a first innings score in overseas Tests (+337).

Day 4 could see India wrapping up a comprehensive victory as Australia’s batters face the daunting task of surviving against a relentless Indian bowling attack on a wearing pitch. Stay tuned for more updates as this enthralling Test unfolds.
