Gautam Gambhir, Head Coach, Indian Cricket Team addressed a press conference in Mumbai ahead of the Indian Cricket Team’s tour of Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy just around the corner, Indian cricket head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the media at a press conference in Mumbai, fielding tough questions as he prepares to lead his team on one of the most challenging tours in international cricket. Gambhir, known for his candid and direct communication style, provided insights into India’s strategy, player form, and challenges, but held back on a key question—Rohit Sharma’s availability for the first Test.
Rohit Sharma's Uncertain Availability
As Rohit Sharma awaits the birth of his second child, speculation has grown about his availability for the opening match in Perth. Gambhir confirmed the situation remains uncertain, explaining, “There is no confirmation yet. We’ll provide an update closer to the start of the series.” If Rohit does miss the game, Jasprit Bumrah will step up as captain, as confirmed by Gambhir. “Bumrah is our vice-captain, so he’s the obvious choice to lead if Rohit is unavailable,” he stated.
With Rohit potentially absent, Gambhir hinted that KL Rahul, another experienced player facing recent criticism, could play a pivotal role. "Rahul can bat anywhere from the top to middle order and could keep wickets if necessary. His flexibility and experience are assets we’re counting on," Gambhir said, reflecting confidence in his squad’s depth.
Bouncing Back After Recent Setbacks
Following an unexpected 3-0 series loss to New Zealand, Gambhir acknowledged the team’s current struggles but assured fans of their resilience. “We were outplayed, and we accept the criticism,” Gambhir remarked. The loss, India’s first home whitewash in years, sparked social media backlash, but Gambhir appeared unfazed. “What difference does social media make? We’re focused on preparing to perform in Australia,” he responded, dismissing the critics.
Gambhir’s selection of new faces, like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana, over more experienced players has raised questions, particularly around Shardul Thakur’s exclusion. Gambhir defended his approach, stating, “Young talent needs to be encouraged, and this tour is a great opportunity for them to prove themselves in challenging conditions.”
Ponting’s Criticism and Gambhir’s Response
In response to recent criticism from former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who questioned the form of Rohit and Virat Kohli, Gambhir didn’t hesitate to defend his players. “Ponting should focus on Australian cricket. We know what we’re capable of, and the hunger within the squad is immense,” he said firmly. Gambhir underscored the importance of Kohli and Rohit regaining form, as their performances in Australia are expected to be crucial for India’s success.
Border-Gavaskar Trophy and World Test Championship Stakes
The stakes are higher than ever for Gambhir and his squad. With a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at risk, a series sweep against Australia is India’s only guaranteed path to the finals. Anything less, and the team would need to rely on other results around the world. "We aren’t focusing on WTC calculations, but we are aware of the stakes. Every series is important,” Gambhir said.
This Border-Gavaskar series promises an intense contest between two teams in transition, with India looking to maintain their unbeaten streak in the trophy, which has remained on Indian soil since 2017. Australia, too, faces internal challenges, including injuries and a recent ODI series defeat to Pakistan. “It won’t be a one-sided affair,” Gambhir admitted. “Both teams have strengths and vulnerabilities, and this could be one of the most balanced series in recent years.”
On Shami, Kuldeep, and India’s Preparation
Injuries to key players such as Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav are also a concern, with Shami’s absence from the New Zealand series and ongoing issues potentially affecting India’s bowling attack. Kuldeep is working on recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), as Gambhir emphasized the importance of having them fit for future assignments. “It’s essential to keep our players healthy and ready. We’ve experienced players who understand the conditions, and preparation will be key to handling Australian pitches,” he explained.
Message for Team India: “Keep the Team Ahead”
Concluding the session, Gambhir shared his guiding principle for the tour: prioritizing team goals over individual accolades. “The only conversation I’ve had with the players is to keep Indian cricket ahead of everything else. Team success comes first,” he emphasized.
With Rohit’s status still uncertain and a challenging series ahead, Gambhir and his squad will have their resilience tested in Australia. As Gambhir noted, “We’re ready to fire from ball one.”
