IPL 2025 Auction Day 1: Key Insights from Franchise Leaders
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – November 24, 2024
The first day of the 2025 TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) Player Auction concluded in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with franchise leaders sharing their perspectives on the day's proceedings.
Stephen Fleming, Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK):
Fleming expressed satisfaction with CSK's acquisitions, highlighting the strategic addition of Rachin Ravindra. He noted, "To pick him up at what I think is a low price and continue his development, he could be a player with that skill set. He does the same as (Ravindra) Jadeja at the moment, but looking forward there could be an opportunity, so if his development continues, he is a very silky player and we are really happy to have him at that price."
Venky Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR):
Mysore emphasized KKR's focus on building a balanced squad. He stated, "Our approach has been to identify and secure players who can contribute across formats and conditions. Today's selections reflect our commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the upcoming season."
Parthiv Patel, Assistant Coach of Gujarat Titans:
Patel highlighted the franchise's emphasis on nurturing young talent. He remarked, "We have invested in emerging players who have shown promise in domestic circuits. Our goal is to provide them with a platform to excel and integrate seamlessly into our team dynamics."
Shashwat Goenka, Owner of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG):
Goenka expressed enthusiasm over acquiring Rishabh Pant, stating, "We are thrilled to have Rishabh join the Super Giants. His leadership and batting prowess are invaluable, and we look forward to a successful partnership."
Ricky Ponting, Head Coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS):
Ponting shared insights into the acquisition of Shreyas Iyer, humorously noting, "I haven’t spoken to him yet. I tried to call him before the auction, but he didn’t pick up. He’s been a successful captain in the IPL before; I worked with him 3-4 years in Delhi, and he was the championship winner last season. I’m delighted to work with him again; if he can do that for us in the IPL, I’ll be pretty happy."
Hemang Badani, Head Coach of Delhi Capitals:
Badani discussed the franchise's strategic picks, emphasizing, "Our selections are aimed at strengthening our core team. We have focused on players who align with our vision and can adapt to various match situations."
Daniel Vettori, Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad:
Vettori highlighted the importance of experience, stating, "We have brought in seasoned players who can mentor our younger squad members. Their experience will be crucial in high-pressure games."
The first day of the auction witnessed significant bids, with Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer securing record-breaking deals exceeding $3 million, marking the highest ever in the tournament's history.
The auction continues tomorrow, with franchises poised to finalize their squads for the upcoming season.
