The second Test match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand took place at the Galle International Stadium. After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first. Sri Lanka scored 306 runs on the first day but lost 3 wickets in the process. The leading scorer, Dinesh Chandimal, amassed an incredible 116 runs off the bat.
On the first day of the 2nd Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Galle, Sri Lanka finished strongly at 306/3, thanks largely to a commanding century from Dinesh Chandimal. After losing opener Pathum Nissanka early for 1, Sri Lanka regrouped with Kusal Mendis and Chandimal leading the charge.
Chandimal’s century, his 16th in Test cricket, was a key highlight, as he struck 116 runs off 208 balls, including 16 boundaries. His partnership with Mendis, who also contributed significantly, laid the foundation for Sri Lanka’s solid position. Chandimal’s resilience was crucial in navigating New Zealand’s bowling attack, especially after Tim Southee provided an early breakthrough.
The day's play saw missed opportunities from New Zealand, including a dropped catch by Daryl Mitchell and a missed stumping by Tom Blundell, which allowed Sri Lanka to build a dominant score. Chandimal’s dismissal late in the day, bowled by Glenn Phillips, was the last major moment as Sri Lanka set themselves up for a potentially commanding first innings.
