Sanju Samson led India to a resounding victory over South Africa in the 1st T20 of the series with a blistering 107 off 50 balls, setting up a 61-run win at Kingsmead Stadium. At the post-match press conference, the player of the match shared insights into his innings, India’s game plan, and his thoughts on leading India’s batting front in Durban.
Samson Reflects on His Game-Changing Innings
Opening the press conference, Samson expressed gratitude for the team's support, emphasizing the team’s strategy to play aggressive cricket from the outset. Reflecting on his 107-run knock, he said, "It was important for me to take the initiative early, especially on a pitch where stroke-making wasn’t easy. Credit to my teammates and the support staff; they gave me the confidence to go out there and express myself."
The captain, Suryakumar Yadav, also played an essential role by anchoring one end while Samson took charge, building crucial partnerships to keep the momentum in India's favor. "Having Surya at the other end helped a lot. His ability to rotate the strike and pick boundaries kept the pressure off me, allowing me to play my natural game," Samson added.
India’s Aggressive Approach Pays Off
India posted an imposing total of 202/8 in their 20 overs, thanks to Samson’s explosive batting, complemented by Abhishek Sharma's steady 78. Samson shared how the team’s aggressive approach was planned, given South Africa's decision to bowl first. "The goal was to put up a big score and make South Africa chase under pressure. We knew that if we could get to 200, we’d be in a good position with our bowling attack."
When asked about his strategy against South Africa's bowlers, Samson highlighted his adaptability. "I tried to pick my moments against their seamers and play smart against the spinners. This pitch offered bounce, and timing was key. Credit to Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen for bowling well, but our plan was to keep the scoreboard ticking," he explained.
Praise for India’s Bowling Performance
Samson also praised India’s bowling unit for restricting South Africa to 141 in just 17.5 overs, effectively sealing a comfortable win. Arshdeep Singh and Ravi Bishnoi starred with the ball, taking three wickets each and preventing South Africa from building any partnerships. "Our bowlers executed their plans beautifully. Restricting a strong South African batting lineup to 141 speaks volumes about our bowling unit’s discipline and skill."
The Indian bowlers exploited the conditions well, maintaining tight lines and creating pressure with timely breakthroughs. Samson noted, "Bowling is always challenging in T20s, but our bowlers read the pitch perfectly and stuck to their lengths."
With a 1-0 lead in the series, Samson shared the team’s focus on consistency and maintaining momentum in the upcoming games. "We’ll carry this momentum and stay grounded. South Africa is a quality team, and we expect them to come back stronger. For us, it’s about staying focused and executing our game plans in every match."
Samson’s superb performance has placed India in a strong position for the series, and fans will be eager to see if he can continue his impressive form. The next game in the series will be crucial as South Africa looks to bounce back and India aims to secure a winning streak.
