Varun Chakravarthy put on a mesmerizing display of spin bowling in the 2nd T20I against South Africa, claiming 5 wickets for just 17 runs in his four-over spell at St George's Park. Despite his efforts, India narrowly lost the game by three wickets as South Africa chased down India's modest target of 125 with one over to spare. Following the match, Chakravarthy addressed the media, sharing his thoughts on his performance, the team's effort, and areas to improve as India faces a must-win game in the series.
Chakravarthy Reflects on His Best T20I Performance
Opening up about his impressive performance, Chakravarthy expressed pride in his spell but remained focused on the team’s goals. “I’m happy to contribute with the ball, but it’s disappointing we couldn’t convert it into a win. It was one of my best spells for India, and I was in a good rhythm tonight. The pitch offered some turn, and I wanted to make the most of it by sticking to a tight line and length," he said.
The spinner was particularly effective against South Africa’s top and middle-order, claiming key wickets including that of captain Aiden Markram and big-hitter David Miller. "It was all about creating pressure and forcing the batters to take risks. The conditions suited spin, and I tried to vary my pace to keep them guessing," he added.
Strategic Bowling Plans Pay Off
When asked about his approach to dismissing South Africa’s experienced batters, Chakravarthy emphasized the importance of patience and precision. “Against strong players like Markram and Miller, you can’t afford to bowl loose deliveries. I focused on building pressure with dot balls, which eventually led to wickets,” he explained.
Chakravarthy’s tight spell, supported by Ravi Bishnoi, who also took crucial wickets, gave India hope as they tried to defend a low total. The spin duo successfully broke through South Africa’s middle-order, reducing the hosts to 86-7 at one stage. "Our plan was to bowl in tandem and exploit any mistake. Bishnoi and I have good chemistry, and we worked together to create wicket-taking opportunities," he noted.
India’s Batting Struggles Continue
India’s struggle with the bat was a talking point, and Chakravarthy acknowledged that defending a low score added pressure to the bowling unit. "We were definitely short by 20-30 runs. If we had a bit more on the board, the result could’ve been different. But as a bowling unit, we did our best to keep the game alive."
Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten 39 was the only major contribution for India, as the team managed just 124/6 in their 20 overs. Chakravarthy credited the South African bowlers but stressed the importance of India’s batters finding form in the next match. "Credit to their bowlers; they kept us under pressure. We need to regroup and put up a stronger batting display in the final T20I," he said.
Optimism Ahead of the Decisive 3rd T20I
Despite the loss, Chakravarthy expressed optimism about India’s prospects in the final game. “We know what we’re capable of as a team. We have one more chance to make things right and take the series. It’s important to stay positive and work on the areas that need improvement,” he concluded.
With the series now tied 1-1, the focus shifts to the upcoming third T20I, where Chakravarthy's bowling form will be critical for India's success.
