The greatest Cricket World Cup ever, the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, had an amazing total economic impact of USD1.39 billion (INR 11,637 Crores) for the Indian economy, according to a new economic assessment released today by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The World Cup, which was held in ten host cities—Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune—between October 5, 2023, and November 19, 2023, demonstrated the importance of ICC events and served as a catalyst for growth in a number of different sectors. It also made a significant economic contribution to India.

Indian businesses in many different sectors benefited directly from the event's staging, which was funded in part by the BCCI and the ICC, as well as by a program of stadium improvements carried out by the State Cricket Associations.

A significant number of both local and foreign tourists attended the matches, generating USD861.4 million in revenue creation through lodging, travel, transportation, and food and beverage sales in the host towns. The economy's secondary and incremental spending was a major contributor, accounting for USD515.7 million, or almost 37% of the overall impact.

Nearly 75% of the record-breaking 1.25 million spectators at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 were there for their first-ever ICC Men's CWC 50-over match. Approximately 55% of the foreign respondents had been to India on a regular basis in the past, while 19% of the international attendees were visiting the nation for the first time because of the World Cup.

Over 68% of international attendees said they would suggest India as a travel destination to friends and family in the future, further enhancing India's reputation internationally. International travelers visited multiple tourist destinations during their stay, resulting in an economic impact of USD281.2 million. While domestic visitors stayed in host cities for an average of two nights, the bulk of foreign visitors stayed in the country for more than five nights.

A staggering 73% of local guests felt that India's hosting of the Cricket World Cup improved the country's reputation, and the event had a USD253.9 million pan-Indian impact, or value unrelated to the host city.

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, which was hosted in the United States, directly generated around 48,000 full- and part-time jobs through the tournament's execution. Additionally, additional hospitality-related companies added another USD 18 million to the local economy.

Through team kit branding, vocal references, and city shots, the event greatly increased the visibility of the host cities and India. This resulted in a USD70.7 million media effect for businesses and stakeholders.

As 59% of foreign attendees indicated they were very inclined to visit India again in the future, the survey also reveals benefits that extend beyond the World Cup time to generate a lasting influence on the Indian economy. The occasion illustrated cricket's potential as a catalyst for economic growth and positioned India as a top-tier athletic destination.

"The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 has demonstrated the significant economic power of cricket, generating economic benefit of USD1.39 billion for India," stated ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice. The event demonstrated that ICC tournaments not only captivate fans with emotion but also make a substantial economic contribution to the host countries, generating thousands cricket jobs and showcasing India as a top travel destination."
